    The purpose of this study was to conduct a review of the self-care of counselors, to understand the current trends of the research, identify the elements of self-care, the value of self-care, the related variables of self-care, and the ethical value of self-care. This study involves a literature reviewed on counselor`s personal problems, their self-care effect, and their self-care strategies in counseling. The major findings of this study were as follows: First, the elements of a counselor`s self-care include the ethical imperative of addressing self-care and thinking of one`s career. Second, it was found that these elements are essential for self-awareness, self-acceptance, self-regulation, and maintaining balance as an individual counselor. Third, counselors are also in need of peer support and supervision, personal therapy, and ongoing professional development. Forth, it is clear from the results that self-care is an effective form of treatment for clients and the successful management of stresses faced at work, is a critical factor in counselor wellness, and the effective functioning of the counseling process. Self-care is also essential for effective services delivery to clients and for the prevention of counselor burnout and countertranseference, countertranseference behavior, countertranseference management, and vicarious traumatization.

    The purpose of this study was to conduct a review of the self-care of counselors, to understand the current trends of the research, identify the elements of self-care, the value of self-care, the related variables of self-care, and the ethical value of self-care. This study involves a literature reviewed on counselor`s personal problems, their self-care effect, and their self-care strategies in counseling. The major findings of this study were as follows: First, the elements of a counselor`s self-care include the ethical imperative of addressing self-care and thinking of one`s career. Second, it was found that these elements are essential for self-awareness, self-acceptance, self-regulation, and maintaining balance as an individual counselor. Third, counselors are also in need of peer support and supervision, personal therapy, and ongoing professional development. Forth, it is clear from the results that self-care is an effective form of treatment for clients and the successful management of stresses faced at work, is a critical factor in counselor wellness, and the effective functioning of the counseling process. Self-care is also essential for effective services delivery to clients and for the prevention of counselor burnout and countertranseference, countertranseference behavior, countertranseference management, and vicarious traumatization.
