This study analyzes the changes in the environment of Nepalese migrants in South Korea following the increase in migrant workers and shifts in Korean visa policies, aiming to propose new missionary strategies in response. Previously, the majority of Nepalese migrants in Korea were short-term labor migrants through the Employment Permit System (EPS).
Recently, however, the number of students has surged due to economic advantages and the influence of the Korean Wave, and migration patterns are diversifying toward long-term settlement accompanied by families.
Since the Christian population in Nepal remains less than 2 percent, with many unreached people groups, their influx into Korea is evaluated as a significant opportunity for twenty-first-century cross-cultural missions. In response to these environmental shifts, this study presents four strategies for future Nepalese migrant missions. First, a shift in spiritual perspective is needed to help migrants realize that although they came to Korea for economic motives, their ultimate purpose is to become the people of God. Second, care and evangelism ministries for existing EPS workers, who labor alone while leaving families in their hometowns, remain valid and must continue. Third, customized ministries must be developed for international students who balance studies and manual labor—often in conditions more precarious than EPS workers-by considering their specific life cycles and needs. Fourth, as family-accompanied migration increases due to long-term stay visas, there is an urgent need to expand into family-oriented ministries, such as establishing schools for the more than 14,000 Nepalese children and youth. In conclusion, missions for the diversifying Nepalese migrant population in Korea must maintain existing ministries for single workers while simultaneously transitioning to a multifaceted and holistic paradigm that actively encompasses the rapidly growing number of students and settling families.
