영어 문법 차이로 살펴본 영국과 미국 언어문화의 보수성과 개방성(subjunctive에 대한 코퍼스 분석을 중심으로) = Conservativeness and openness of British and American culture based on the differences of English grammar (Focused on corpus analysis on subjunctive)

국문 초록 (Abstract)

언어는 문화와 뗄래야 뗄 수 없는 관계에 있다. 언어를 연구하는 것이 곧 언어 사용자들의 문화를 알 수 있는 첩경임은 두 말할 나위가 없다. 본 논문은 요즘 언어학계에서 각광받고 있는 언어 연구 방법인 코퍼스 언어분석법을 활용하여 영국 영어와 미국 영어의 차이점을 밝히고 더 나아가 영국과 미국 사회의 특징에 대한 이해의 지평을 넓히는데 그 목적이 있다. 지금껏 영국 영어와 미국 영어의 비교는 주로 발음, 철자, 단어 수준에서 이루어져 왔지만 본고는 이런 어휘 수준을 넘어 문법적 차원에서 두 언어를 비교하고 있다. 기존에 학습해 온 이론적인 문법 상식에 의지하지 않고 영국인과 미국인들이 실제 사용하는 언어 자료를 활용하여 분석하였기 때문에 보다 객관적인 결과를 도출할 수 있었다. 영국 영어 코퍼스인 BNC와 미국 영어 코퍼스인 COCA를 활용하여 분석했는데 분석대상은 영어 문법에서 아직 실현되지 않은 일들에 대한 소망, 감정, 가능성, 판단, 의견, 필요성 등을 나타내는 ‘subjunctive’로 하였다. 분석 결과 영국 영어가 미국 영어에 비해 훨씬 개방적인 경향성이 강하고 미국 영어에 보수적인 경향성이 강한 측면이 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 각 문화 집단에서 사용하는 언어의 사용양상들을 객관적인 데이터를 통해 분석하고 이를 통해 그 언어 사용 집단 문화의 특징을 파악할 수 있는 코퍼스 언어분석법을 활용한 본고는 다문화 사회 간 문화 비교연구에 있어 새로운 장을 여는 연구방법을 제시했다고 할 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Language and culture are inseparable from each other. It goes without saying that studying a language is a shortcut to understanding the culture of the language users. This paper aims at clarifying the differences between British and American English and broadening our understanding of the characteristics of British and American society through corpus-based language analysis which is popular in recent linguistics. Thus far, the comparison of the two languages has been made in the level of pronunciation, spelling and vocabulary but this paper compare the two languages in grammar level. The data-driven analysis used here is not based upon traditional grammar but upon the real data collected from native British and Americans, thus producing more objective results. BNC(British National Corpus) and COCA(Corpus of Contemporary American English) is utilized in the analysis. The object of the analysis is subjunctive expressing a hope for the thing that has yet to occur, emotion, possibility, judgment, opinion, necessity and so forth. The result shows that British English is much more inclined to openness and American English conservativeness. Utilizing corpus analysis based upon the objective data which enables us to examine the use of language in a certain cultural group and to understand the characteristics of the culture the language users belong to, this paper suggests a new research methodology in the field of comparative studies of multicultural society.
