The therapeutic efficacy of the recently developed topical thrombin- a sterile, freeze-dried powder derived from bovin plasma containing the protein substance prepared from prothrombin through interaction with added thromboplastin in the presence of calcium - was evaluated in 30 patients with postextraction bleeding. Total 60 cases divided into control (30 patients) group and experimental group (30 patients) for hemostasis by the topical use of thrombin.
24 cases of the control group were surgical extraction and the rest 6 cases were simple extract ion, 22 cases of the experimental group were surgical extraction and the rests of the group were simple extraction.
The following results were obtained;
1. The experimental group, compared with control group, has shorter clotting time with 95% confidence.
2. No side effect was seen.
3. This drug can be used effectively and safely for hemostatic management in minor surgery of Oral and Maxillofacial field after further study.
