의암 손병희의 심성 수양론 연구 = A Study on Euam`s Idea of Mind and Cultivation of the Mind

This article is to study Euam`s idea of mind and cultivation of the mind in order to understand the structure of mind. It seems that Donghak`s idea is that there doesn`t exist vice because Hanul is in the human body. But this is not true of the real world. How did Euam explain this? He thought that human nature has two features, one is Wongakseong and the other Hyeulgakseong. Wongakseong stands for the pure mind and Hyeulgakseong the impure mind. And Hyeulgakseong creates Muljeongsim(the mind stained with the external objects) in the human mind. Vice arises from this very Muljeongsim. Then how should people cultivate the mind to attain to the human nature after they realize Euam`s idea of the structure of the mind? Euam`s way of cultivating the mind is to keep on reciting the 21 words with sincerity, which is not different with that of his two masters, Su-un and Haewol. However, he also presented a new way other than his two masters. His new way reminds us how minutely he searched the human mind. The goal of this article is to show that Euam developed two masters` way of cultivating of the mind and his new way has the connection with Mencius and Chu-tzu.
