The purpose of this study is to investigate which the teacher's teaching behaviors affects the cognitive load in Elementary Mathematics Class. In this study, the teaching behaviors were categorized into lesson structure, clear explanation, variety of lesson, and learning management and assessment. The cognitive load was categorized into task demand, mental effort, task difficulty, and self-evaluation.
The subjects were 364 elementary school students of 6th grade, and 30 teachers of 6 schools located in D City. The collected data was analyzed in terms of multiple regression with SPSS WIN. 20.0 program.
The main results of the research were as follow:
First, learning management and evaluation which is sub-variables of teaching behaviors have a negative influence on mental effort(β=-.167, p < .01), have a positive impact on self-evaluation(β=.127,p < .05).
Second, lesson structure which is sub-variables of teaching behaviors have a negative influence on task difficulty(β=-.140, p < .05).
Third, variety of lesson which is sub-variables of teaching behaviors have a negative influence on task difficulty(β=-.190 p <.01).
In summary, learner's cognitive load becomes lower with better lesson structure, variety of lesson, and learning management and assessment. The findings provide practical implications on how a teacher strategically teaching behaviors to reduce cognitive load.
