사회적 임계현상의 사례 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 밀의 비교방법론을 적용하여 2002년 월드컵 길거리응원과 2008년 광우병 촛불시위를 사회적 임계현상의 관점에서 분석한다. 2002년 월드컵 응원과 2008년 촛불시위는 초기 제한된 공간에 국한되었던 행위자의 상호작용이 구심점 및 에너지의 유입으로 폭발적 무리행동으로 전환된 사건이다. 성격이 상이해 보이는 두 사건은 놀라울 정도로 공통된 복잡계적 속성을 보였다. 침체된 사회적 분위기 속에서 공명(resonance)이 형성되었고, 불안한 균형점에서 임계현상이 발생했다. 이러한 초기 조건 하에서 선택의 상호의존을 통한 긍정 피드백이 작동하면서 두 사건 모두 폭발적인 무리행동으로 발전했다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper compares the herding behavior triggered by two socially critical phenomena in Korea: the 2002 World Cup street celebration and 2008 US beef protest. Utilizing the comparative methods of agreement and difference, we distill the characteristics of complex systems embedded in the two cases, while juxtaposing the phenomena with two seemingly similar events (the 2009 Taiwan beef protest and 2012 Korean mad cow disease uproar) which generated non-herding behavior. We argue that, where herding behavior erupts, social depression and political dissatisfaction provide the crucial background conditions for resonance-the system’s tendency to oscillate with greater amplitude. An active social media, which accelerate the interaction of social choices and breed a positive feedback loop, are a necessary but not sufficient condition for this behavior.
