Concepts and methods of probability are the proper bases for the evaluation of structural safety and performance, and the development of design criteria. With the recent progress in the probabilistic approach to risk evaluation and design, the implementation of these concepts is now practically possible and viable.
The principal concepts required for implementation are summarized herein, with emphasis on the formulation and evaluation of structural safety. Also discussed herein are concepts of reliability theory and probabilistic bases of structural safety and practical approuch to code calibration.
