How To Be an Inductive Dogmatist = 귀납적 독단론자가 되는 방법

국문 초록 (Abstract)

지각적 정당화에 대한 회의주의에 대해서 많이 논의 되어왔던 독단록적 입장을 귀납적 정당화에 대한 회의주의에도 적용할 만하다. 즉, 세계가 지금 이 순간 이후에 극적으로 변할 것이라는 가설은 귀납적 정당화에 대한 잠재적 반박자일 뿐이며, 그러한 가설이 참이라고 믿을 만한 근거가 있지 않은 한, 귀납적 정당화를 반박하지 못한다는 것이다. 하지만 귀납 추론에 대한 전통적인 입장에 따르면, 이런 독단론적 입장은 귀납적 정당화에 적용될 수 없다. 귀납적 정당화는 회의적 가설이 거짓이라는 명제, 즉 "자연의 균일성" 원리에 어떤 방식으로 토대를 두고 있다고 생각되기 때문이다. 이 논문에서 필자는 귀납적 정당화가 자연의 균일성 원리에 토대를 두고 있다는 어떤 분명한 의미도 없음을 보이고자 한다. 이를 위해 귀납이 자연의 균일성 원리에 근거를 둘 수 있는 두 가지 의미를 구분하고, 그 각각에 대해서 귀납적 관행과 자연의 균일성의 원리의 관계가 흔히 생각되는 것 같이 직접적이지 않다고 논증한다. 결과적으로 귀납적 독단론을 지지할 수 있는 가능성이 열리게 된다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

It is tempting to develop the “dogmatist” response to inductive skepticism. The idea is that the skeptical hypothesis that the universe will cease to be uniform is a mere possible defeater, which actually defeats inductive justification only when there is good positive reason to believe that it is true. But traditionally it has been thought that the principle of the uniformity of nature is not merely something whose falsity can defeat inductive justification, but something inductive justification is founded upon. In this paper, I try to show that there is no clear sense in which inductive justification is founded upon such a principle. For this, I distinguish two different ways in which inductive justification might be based upon the principle of the uniformity of nature. And for each of them, I argue that the principle fails to play the role that it is expected to play. If this is right, then we will have cleared up the ground for inductive dogmatism.
