All existence in Jainism is categorized in the pure soul, jīva, and the others, ajīva, which includes matter(pudgala), space(ākāśa), motion(dharma), rest(adharma) as well as cognitive activities of sentient beings. Every physical existents are constituted by the basic building block of material, paramāṇu, and occupy a proper number of basic spatial unit, pradeśa. Movements of atoms from one pradeśa to adjacent one explains the changes and motions of existents in the Universe.
Jaina canonical literatures repeatedly underline the significance of the influx of karma-matter, resulting in the restriction of jīva and the realities of sentient beings in the fettered Universe, and the possibility of liberation after the dissolution of karma. The jīvas, which is fundamentally free and eternal, are fettered to the Universe by being tied up with material existence. Therefore, jīva is bound to the Universe as the number of matter, or atoms, are attached to the space-point (pradeśa). The liberation of jīva assumes that it breaks up the bondages to the material units, which can be enumerated by the number of corresponding space-points.
In this paper, I suggest that the development of such critical concepts in Jainism as paramāṇu and pradeśa has something, if not everything, to do with the purpose of enumeration of the bondages in terms of the practice for liberation, in addition to the elaboration of their ontology or cosmology. The Jain ascetics probably wanted to make a good educated guess for the amount of hardships they should undergo by investigating the very existence of the Universe.
