Abundant growth of phytoplanktonic bloom frequently occurring in stagnant water bodies such as artificial lakes and the increase of organic matter due to the planktonic bloom have been important elements for water quality management. Nevertheless, the quantity of organic matter produced as a result of primary production by phytoplankton has not been considered and controlled and, consequently, water quality criteria in public waters have not been met by now. For Lake Euiam, eutrophication of water body has been accelerated and the internal production by phytoplankton continuously led to an increase of BOD. The increase of BOD could be a reason why the effluent from a nearby sewage treatment plant to public waters has not been a key factor in improving the water quality of the receiving water body. To simulate the water quality changes in Lake Euiam, WASP5 computer model was used. The result of simulation demonstrated that it would be necessary to further reduce the nutrient loadings in Chuncheon sewage treatment plant effluent if the increase of organic matters by phytoplanktonic primary production due to the eutrophication of Lake Euiam is to be controlled.
