Urban forests are increasingly recognized as an important nature-based solution (NbS) for mitigating air pollution. Although ground-based monitoring stations are distributed nationwide, most are located in city centers or along roadways, which restricts assessment of air quality within urban forests. This study aims to estimate daily surface NO₂ concentrations at a 1-km resolution across South Korea by developing a machine learning model that integrates ground-based observations and satellite data, and to quantitatively compare NO₂ concentration characteristics between urban forests and urban areas. Tropospheric NO₂ vertical column densities from the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) aboard Sentinel-5P, ground-level NO₂ measurements from Air Korea, and other predictor variables (e.g., land cover, topography, and the Enhanced Vegetation Index) are used as inputs to the model. The XGBoost model achieves the highest performance (R² = 0.84, RMSE = 3.88 ppb). Independent validation using observations from urban forest show a strong correlation (R = 0.8), demonstrating the model’s generalization capability. SHAP analysis identifies TROPOMI-derived NO₂ as the most influential predictor, while EVI shows a negative influence, indicating that areas with higher vegetation vigor tend to exhibit lower predicted NO₂ concentrations. To assess the mitigating effect of urban forests, NO₂ concentrations are compared between forested and urban environments in Seoul and six major metropolitan cities. Urban forests display lower NO₂ levels by 5–10 ppb, with the largest differences during winter. In Seoul, wintertime NO₂ concentrations in urban forests (18.9 ppb) are about 27% lower than in urban areas (25.9 ppb), highlighting the substantial capacity of forests to reduce pollution. This study quantitatively demonstrates the influence of urban forests on NO₂ concentrations and provides foundational data to inform urban green space management and policy, reinforcing their role as an NbS for improving air quality.
