한국사회의 노년기 연령규범에 관한 연구 = A Study on Age Norms in Later life in Korea

The purpose of this study is to identify the age norms in later life in Korea. In this study, age norms include five sub-areas such as work, family relationship, sexuality and remarriage/divorce, intergenerational transfers, and social activities in later life. Each area is composed of norms which support activity theory and disengagement theory respectively - work, intergenerational transfers, and social activity (encouraging activity versus discouraging activity) / sexuality, remarriage, and divorce (positive versus negative) / family relationship (independent versus dependent relationship). In addition, norms of traditional sex-role are employed in order to identify the effects of gender on age norms. Study population is 822 persons aged 60 and older who are using multi-purpose senior center located in Metropolitan areas such as Busan, Kwangju, Daejeon, and Daegu. The results show that respondents show very positive attitudes toward all areas of age norms supporting activity theory except the norms of sexuality and remarriage/divorce. Interestingly, they also agreed to age norms of disengagement theory, but they are more positive toward age norms of activity theory than those supporting disengagement theory. The responses to age norms vary with socio-demographic status. In sum, age norms in later life are vague and confused among Korean elders, though age norms supporting activity theory are more prevalent than those of disengagement theory. Socio-demographic variables play an important role in recognizing age norms in later life.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구의 목적은 한국사회에 노년기 연령규범이 형성되어 있는지, 만약 형성되어 있다면 어느 시기에 적용되는 것인지, 어느 정도 확고하게 형성되어 있는지, 그리고 바람직하게 여겨지고 있는 연령규범은 무엇인지를 밝히는데 있다. 이를 위해 부산, 대구, 대전, 광주지역의 노인종합복지관을 이용하는 60세 이상 노인 822명을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였다. 연구결과에서 밝혀진 한국사회의 노년기 연령규범의 적용시기는 70세가 32.4%, 65세가 28.8%로 나타났으며, 노년기를 인지하게 된 계기로는 신체적 변화가 가장 높은 비율을 보였고, 그 다음으로는 사회적 역할의 변화, 그리고 심리적 변화 순으로 나타났다. 한국 사회 노인들은 노년기 연령규범의 각 영역에서 활동이론을 지지하는 활동지향적/독립적/긍정적 규범들을 매우 긍정적으로 인지하고 있는 동시에 분리이론을 지지하는 소극적/상호의존적/수동적 규범에 대해서도 긍정적으로 수용하고 있는 것으로 나타나, 한국 사회의 노년기 연령규범은 활동이론과 분리이론의 규범들이 혼재해 있는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 중요한 사실은, 노년기 연령규범의 혼재에도 불구하고 한국 노인들은 자신이 처한 사회·인구학적 지위나 환경에 알맞은 연령규범들을 차별적으로 수용하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 오늘의 노인은 어제의 노인과 다르며, 내일의 노인은 또 다른 모습으로 나타날 것이다. 우리 사회는 변화하고 있는 노인들을 인정하고 받아들여야 한다. 노인들의 변화를 따라잡지 못하고 있는 구시대의 연령규범이 노년기의 보람되고 활기찬 사회활동을 통해 '제 3의 시대(the third age)'를 추구하려는 노인들의 발목을 잡아서는 안 될 것이다.
