의성어․의태어를 활용한 조음 중재 프로그램 효과: 지적장애 학생의 자음 정확도 및 말 명료도 향상 = Effectiveness of an Onomatopoeia- and Mimetic Word-Based Articulation Program for Students with Intellectual Disabilities: Focus on Consonant Accuracy and Speech Intelligibility

국문 초록 (Abstract)

지적장애 학생은 낮은 인지 능력으로 언어발달에 부정적인 영향을 받아 의사소통에 어려움을 보이며, 특히 조음영역 결함은 음소 산출과 의미 있는 단어 형성에 핵심적인 장애 요인이 된다. 본 연구는 의성어․의태어를 활용한 조음중재 프로그램이 지적장애 학생의 조음 능력 향상에 미치는 효과를 검증하였다. 총 12회기 프로그램에 참여한 지적장애 학생 5명은 자음 정확도, 음절 및 단어 단위 말명료도에서 모두 통계적으로 유의미한 향상을 보였으며, 효과량(Cohen’s d)은 2.75~6.21로 매우 큰 수준이었다. 특히 초기 자음 정확도와 말명료도가 낮을수록 향상 폭이 컸다. 이러한 결과는 의성어․의태어 기반 중재가 발화 촉진과 명료도 향상에 효과적임을 보여주며, 조음 능력이 낮은 지적장애 학생에게 적용 가능성이 높음을 시사한다. 본 연구는 의성어와 의태어의 기능적 측면에 주목하여 발화 능력 향상을 위한 효과적인 언어 중재 방법을 제안한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The low cognitive abilities of students with intellectual disabilities often negatively affect their language development, resulting in difficulties in achieving effective communication. Among various language components, articulation plays a crucial role in accurately producing phonemes and forming meaningful words. This study aimed to improve the articulation skills of students with intellectual disabilities through an articulation intervention program utilizing onomatopoeia and mimetic words. The intervention was conducted over 12 sessions, and all five participating students demonstrated improvements in consonant accuracy as well as speech intelligibility at both the syllable and word levels. Results from the pre- and post-intervention assessments showed statistically significant improvements in all three outcome measures, with very large effect sizes (Cohen’s d ranging from 2.75 to 6.21), indicating a high level of intervention effectiveness. Notably, students with lower initial performance in consonant accuracy and speech intelligibility showed greater gains, suggesting that training using onomatopoeia and mimetic words can be effectively applied even to students with lower articulation abilities. These findings highlight the functional potential of onomatopoeia and mimetic expressions and suggest their broader applicability as a language intervention method.
