The purpose of this study is to analyze the rebellious characteristics of glam, punk, and hip hop among the subcultures from the 1960s through the 1980s and the characteristics of romanticism fashion in the 19th century, each respectively, and further analyze the concept of rebellious romanticism from the researcher's perspective to develop designs. The concept of rebellious fashion and romanticism fashion and the process of change according to such were examined, and the characteristics of each costume were considered. Furthermore, 8 works were developed by applying to the design the rebellious romanticism fashion style, which is reflective of the characteristics of both rebellious fashion and romanticism.
As for the research method, domestic books, dissertations, and academic journals on rebellious fashion and romanticism fashion were reviewed for the theoretical background, while the collection image data were collected based on the fashion website of Vogue USA and the official website of each brand, respectively.
As for the scope of research, the subcultures including glam, punk, and hip hop from the 1960s through the 1990s, and romanticism of the 19th century after the 16th century Renaissance, 17th century Baroque, and 18th century Rococo in the process of changing rebellious fashion are included. By analyzing the aesthetic characteristics of art accordingly, it is applied to design, then a proposal is made thereby.
As for the case of rebellious fashion, it primarily began with the youth culture, which is a culture that denied the very existence of society at the time and rebelled against it. The youth culture that resists the mainstream older generation primarily develops in the form of upward propagation towards the main older generation, which often leads to the street culture, and their fashion style rather influences the older generation and mainstream culture and becomes trendy. The rebellious style of such subculture has also been a source of inspiration for many designers who have created collections. At many brands, the subculture style is usually revealed as a fusion style of the details of the existing major ready-to-wear and subculture fashion details.
As for the romanticism fashion, it is a longing for the past and a phenomenon of returning towards the past in Europe of the 19th century, which has been longed for the culturally and artistically rich era of Renaissance. This called for a feminine romantic style in modern fashion, and the romanticism has been established as a romantic style with lovely femininity. As the romanticism of longing and return to the past has been established as a romantic style, a third romanticism style that fuses the heterogeneous cultures with the romantic style has emerged. It may be considered that the point of start is the same, while the need for research is raised in that the fusion of heterogeneous cultures added to romanticism can build a new fashion style.
Romanticism may be interpreted as a reaction against reason and the existing order and against classicism in the art. It was interpreted as breaking out of the existing classicism via the appeal for emotional recovery and the appeal for the deep dark human emotions of fear and pain, then it was interpreted as something fanciful. romanticism is building a style in modern fashion, and it may often be interpreted as romanticism or a phenomenon of reversion to the past cultures. romanticism in fashion, that is, romanticism, is developed as a style of modern fashion design. romanticism in modern fashion often expresses loveliness, and the romantic decorative elements such as ruffles and frills are often used in designs. The anarchistic resistance subculture which rebels against the older generation is also established as one of the means of expression of modern fashion design in a similar aspect to the romanticism in the modern fashion. In romanticism, this study seeks to propose a design collection where fantasy romanticism is revealed as the other side of the rebellious subculture by connecting the sensibility that humans break out of both sides of dark fear and the means of expression from the rebellious subculture to the rebellious fashion. Both the romanticism and the rebellious subculture may be established in common with the concept of reaction and resistance to the existing. This may be considered as a point of contact where the two different cultures, which are revealed in different styles in the contemporary fashion design, may be connected.
Hence, this study seeks to propose the fashion of ‘rebellious romanticism’ by adding rebellious fashion to the romanticism. By analyzing the characteristics of rebellious fashion, the purpose was to develop 8 designs as a new fashion style called “rebellious romanticism.” It was developed by analyzing the aesthetic characteristics in line with the characteristics of design elements of romanticism and rebellious subculture and applying them as the rebellious romanticism.
The works primarily revealed rebellious characteristics by digitally printing graffiti, an element of punk subculture, and heightened romanticism with feminine flower digital printing patterns. Furthermore, a new rider jacket style was proposed by combining the romantic elements such as puff details and frills on the sleeves of punk rider jackets.
On top of the digital printing where the graffiti elements containing messages of resistance to society were reflected, graffiti images were developed as digital printing through the stages of magnifying and distorting typography by viewing it as the image itself. A printing design was developed which is reflective of the rebellious message and at the same time reveals the formative elements of the letters themselves.
As such, by proposing a design of a new modern fashion style called “rebellious romanticism,” it is expected to combine the complex and heterogeneous cultures and establish itself as a new fashion culture in line with the retro phenomenon where the return towards the past culture becomes stronger.
