엘리자베스 비숍은 "불가해한" 시인?: 무어, 로월과 비숍 읽기

국문 초록 (Abstract)

엘리자베스 비숍은 1950년대 이후의 미국시인들 중 현재 가장 주목받고 있는 시인이다. 1956년 퓰리처상을 받을 만큼, 시인들 사이에서는 이미 뛰어난 작가로 인정받았던 비숍에 대한 비평이 왜 1980년대 중반까지 전멸하다시피 한 것이며, 왜 현대시와 최근시에 관한 대부분의 논의에서 제외되었는가 본 연구는 이러한 질문에 대한 해답을 찾아가는 과정에서 비숍 시세계의 특징을 밝히고, 다른 시인들과의 구체적인 관계 속에서 비숍의 시를 논의하며, 나아가서 비숍의 현재의 위상과 그 의미를 고찰한다.
비숍이 영향을 받은 시인과 비숍이 영향을 끼친 시인들 가운데 특히 비숍과 가장 긴밀한 관계를 유지했던 매리언 무어와 로버트 로월의 작품과 비숍의 작품을 비교 분석한다. 비숍의 시는 무어의 시와 유사하게 세밀한 관찰에서 출발하긴 하지만, 더욱 미묘한 심미적 윤리적 인식으로 확장해 나간다. 비숍 또한 자신의 삶을 바탕으로 한 상실, 고통, 고독 등을 다루고 있지만, 로월보다 덜 고백적이고 덜 역사적이며, 더욱 포착하기 어려운 시인으로 보인다.

Elizabeth Bishop is one of the greatest poets in the canon of contemporary American poetry. Although she has always had her keenest admirers among writers, her reputation has ascended steadily and slowly. Why it took several decades for the dimensions of her achievement to get general appreciation This study explores Bishop's features, searching for the answers for the above question, and reads her "enigmatic" poems closely along with the poetry of Marianne Moore and Robert Lowell. Bishop's relationship with Moore and Lowell is complex; they were her closest friends and mentors, and at the same time her influence on them was immense.
Like Moore, Bishop often starts her poems with close observation. Out of small perception, however, Bishop's poems are open into explorations of large and complex problems, including loss, rootlessness, loneliness, and nature. They often lead to wisdom, which is also uncertain and insecure. Like Lowell, some of her poems come from her personal experience. In brief, Bishop is less confessional, less historical, and more elusive than Lowell.
