Established earthquake design spectrum is based on the records of strong earthquake. If the design spectrum is applied in the region where moderate or weak earthquake is expected to occur, the scaled-down values from the strong earthquake responses are used according to the intensity of moderate or weak earthquake. In Korea, moderate or weak earthquake has much more chances to occur than strong earthquake does. Therefore, it is desirable that one examine the appropriateness of using this design spectrum in such region.
For this study, three groups of earthquake records are used, and each consists of eight data recorded by Smart 1 Array at Lotung in the northest toner of Taiwan. The intensities of each group are evaluated by maximum RMS(root-mean-square) ground acceleration, and their design spectra are constructed.
It is observed that the intensity of earthquake has a great effect on the acceleration amplifications of design spectrum, and there is more possibility of having under-estimated or over-estimated seismic design when the design spectrum obtained from strong earthquake records is used in the different regions.
