As twenty-first-century performing arts have shifted from an auditory-centered form to a visually oriented integrated art, stage costumes have evolved beyond mere clothing to become a core visual language that conveys characters’ psychology and narrative. In contemporary opera productions, historicity grounded in historical research and contemporaneity achieved through modern reinterpretation coexist, and how these two values are harmonized to communicate with audiences has emerged as a key aesthetic challenge. This study aims to propose a new direction for stage costume design that integrates historicity and contemporaneity, using Verdi’s opera Il Trovatore as its focus.
The research methodology combines a literature review, case analysis, and creative work development. First, through theoretical examination, the formative elements of stage costume and the characteristics of opera costumes were identified. In the case analysis, a comparison was conducted between a Metropolitan Opera production (1988), which emphasizes historical reconstruction, and a Korean National Opera production (2023), which features a strong contemporary interpretation. The analysis revealed that historicity secures a sense of period authenticity through costume silhouettes and structural completeness, while contemporaneity effectively visualizes characters’ inner psychology through the transformation of modern materials and surface treatment techniques.
Based on these findings, the design strategy was defined as the “integration of historical forms with contemporary materials and surface techniques.” Drawing on Zygmunt Bauman’s concept of “liquid modernity” as a conceptual framework, the costumes were designed to reflect the process by which rigid destinies are dismantled by individual emotions. Specifically, the silhouettes of fifteenth-century Spanish dress were adopted as a foundation, while contemporary materials such as denim, synthetic leather, and gauze were combined with modern techniques including burning, destroyed finishes, heat-transfer foil, and gradation painting to develop seven stage costumes.
The completed costumes were used in an actual stage production of Il Trovatore, the opening work of the 22nd Daegu International Opera Festival in 2025. Through elements such as Manrico’s corroded metal-textured armor, Count di Luna’s blue-toned metallic armor, Azucena’s carbonized corset resembling tree bark made of hanji paper, Leonora’s lace layering, and the use of burning techniques applied to the male and female gypsies and the nuns, the costumes simultaneously embodied the historical grandeur inherent in traditional forms and the characters’ complex inner psychologies, including desire, destruction, anger, and trauma, through materials and surface treatments. This study confirms that historicity and contemporaneity are not opposing values but complementary ones, and it is significant in that it expands the possibilities for contemporary reinterpretation of opera stage costume by presenting a practical design methodology that preserves the authenticity of classical opera while eliciting empathy from modern audiences.
