Recently meaningful researches have been carried out to examine buildings before construction or cultural assets under recovery using computer graphic technology. However, most of researches on virtual buildings are based on Web3D on the desktop computer, so they cannot be directly applicable to the field and their reality is low. Augmented reality can solve these problems to some degree, but because previous researches on augmented reality calculate the transformation of virtual objects every time in the server, they may cause server overload, and so are not suitable for the examination of virtual buildings.
Thus, recognizing that necessity of a new method that reduces server load by distributing part of the transformation of virtual objects in the server to clients, the present study purposed to propose a new method. This research implemented a virtual building viewer using a mobile device, GPS fixed on the mobile device, and an accelerometer. This method, first, exploits the portability and practicality of a mobile device and, second, reduces server load and enhances throughput by calculating the transformation of virtual objects not in the server by in a client using a sensor.
The proposed method takes the following procedure. The server determines position and direction through imaging processing, which compares the position information of GPS obtained from the client with 3D objects predefined in the server. Then, if it sends the client information about the virtual building in the calculated position and direction and matching information, the client receives the information and matches it on the camera screen. In addition, the client can perform the transformation of virtual buildings according to the user’s movement detected by the accelerometer independently without additional connection to the server.
