청 제국의 지배이념과 지배체제 = Rules and ideology of the Qing Empire

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

By addressing that today China’s territorial boundaries and ethnic composition were largely built on the historical legacy of the imperial China, this paper aims to analyze the ruling structure and ideology that had sustained the complex and diverse aspects of the Qing empire. This paper especially focuses on recent studies published in Japan and the US. It has been widely known that since the early twentieth century the Japanese scholarship has paid special attentions to close connections between the Mongols and Manchus, further highlighting the Inner Asian tradition and the Tibetan Buddhism in the Qing rule. Notably, since the late 1990s, the so-called New Qing History in the US has questioned the conventional assumptions about sinicization and raised a new concern with the Manchus and their relationship to China, as well as that of other non-Han groups under the Qing rule. Through introducing the scholarly literature written in Japanese and English, this paper explores the various elements of Qing government structures and ruling ideology, and rediscovers the Qing as an Inner Asian, as well as a Chinese, empire. By so doing, it shows that given the persistent difficulties the Chinese Communist Party faces in extending its Chinese national vision to Tibet, Xinjiang, and Inner Mongolia, the revelation of features of the Qing imperial ruling can retain a great significance today.
