증강현실 기술의 경찰도입에 관한 연구 = A Survey on Application of Virtual Reality Technology on Policing

국문 초록 (Abstract)

최근 실용화 단계에 진입한 증강현실 기술은 경찰활동을 보다 효율적으로 변화 시킬 것으로 보인다. 하지만 다양한 법 집행 상황에서 경찰활동의 성과를 극대화 할 수 있는 잠재력이 있옴에도 불구하고 경찰활동과 증강현실 기술에 관한 연구는 거의 전무한 실정 이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 증강현실의 개념, 경찰활동과의 이론적 매개, 실제적인 도입 방안, 그리고 증강현실 기술 도입을 위한 선결과제를 고찰하였다.
증강현실은 HMD(head mount display) 흑은 HUD(head-up display)등 각종 디스플레이를 활용하여 현실세계에 가상의 이미지를 덧입히는 기술로써 현실세계와 실 시간으로 상호작용하며 , 현실세계를 보충하고, 사용자의 몰입감을 증대시키는 기술이다. 이러한 증강현실 기술은 위험성, 돌발성 그리고 기동성 등의 특수성으로 인하여 신속하며 합리적인 의사결정을 필요로 하는 경찰활동을 효과적으로 보완할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다. 이와 더불어 증강현실 기술이 소셜 네트워크와 접목된다면 지역사회 경찰활동을 촉진까지도 기대 할 수 있게 된다.
물론 증강현실 기술의 도입과 지속적이며 안정적인 운용을 위해서는 사회적 합의 , 시스템의 구축과 보안의 문제 등 선결되어야 할 문제들이 존재한다. 증강현실 기술의 접목 을 위한 지속적인 연구와 실무적인 노력, 실제적 도입을 위한 선결과제의 해결 그리고 도입 이후의 평가와 보완이 적절히 이루어진다면 증강현실 기술은 경찰활동을 보다 효율 적으로 변화시키게 될 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Practical application of virtual reality technology has been made possible recently. This technology has the potential to make police activities more effective and efficient. Despite the potential to maximize performance of police activities in various scenarios, there is almost no ongoing research that relate virtual reality technology to police activities. With this in mind, this study intends to examine the concept of virtual reality, theoretical connections to police activity, practical application and obstacles that need to be resolved for practical application of this technology.
Virtual reality uses various types of displays, such as a HMD(head mount display) or a HUD(head-up display), to add a layer of a virtual world onto the real world, in order to interact with the real world real-time, add complementary information on the real world, and increase sense of reality for the user. Considering the elements of danger, spontaneity and mobility of police activities, virtual reality technology can be expected to become an effective complementary tool for making rational decisions with celerity in a well-informed manner. Additionally, if virtual reality technology can be applied to social networking, facilitation of community policing can also be expected.
Obstacles to stable operation of virtual reality technology is the lack of social consensus, the lack of a reliable, working system, and security issues. These must be resolved to implement virtual reality technology into police activities. Further research, effort and interest of practitioners, resolving obstacles to actual implementation, and appropriate evaluation and correcting any problem that may arise after implementation is required for using virtual reality technology to change the police into a more effective and efficient work force.
