According to American music educator Edwin E. Gordon, musical talent is developed from birth up to the age of 9, and afterwards no longer developed. Many music educators agree with the Gordon`s theory and accordingly, recommend preschool musical education. This essay is written to show the difference between the musical talent of those who have experienced music before the age of 9 and that of those who have not. That is to say, the purpose of this essay is to show how important preschool musical education is for the development of the musical talent. The 171 student of 6th grade in an elementary school were chosen as a survey target. Questionnaire for surveying their musical experiences and `Korean Music aptitude test` developed by professor Kyung-sil Hyun were used. Collected data were computerized by using statistics program SPSS 12.0. Frequency analysis was performed in order to get data of their musical interests, family environments, and musical experiences. Moreover, One way ANOVA and T-statistics were performed and bivariate correlation coefficient was obtained. The following results were obtained: 1. Those who have learned music before the age of 9 is more talented than those who have not. 2. There is a statistically close relationship between the musical interest and the musical talent. 3. There is a statistically close relationship between the family environment and the musical talent. 4. There is a statistically close relationship between the musical experience besides the music lessons in a school and the musical talent. This essay approves that the earlier one learns music, the more one becomes talented for music. The writer hopes that more children have the opportunities to learn music in preschool education.
