2017년 카셀 도큐멘타 14 “아테네에서 배우기”의 기록화 스토리텔링 = Documentation Storytelling about “Learning at Athens” through Kassel Documenta 14 in 2017

This article is dealing with the documentation storytelling research about the art festival, Documenta 14 in Kassel, 2017. All of the artworks exhibited has a historical message. Documenta, which promotes historical introspection, reappearance, and future-oriented reconstitution of history, is a documentation of history itself. Therefore Documenta derives the story inherent in documentation, that humans today are looking forward to.
Documenta in Kassel is both a product of World WarⅡ and of the European history. Especially, Documenta 14 is interpreted as a kind of ‘Renaissance’, which developed whenever the Europe society faces crisis. It endeavored to recall the Greek spirit which ruled across Europe two thousand years ago, and appeared as a political, cultural action to regret and introspect the criminal acts of European history in the 20th century.
Documenta learned about Athens, and now it’s our turn to learn. An art festival which will be a historical and cultural landmark of Eastern Asia should be structured. A universal but also specially Korean, and creative festival should be designed. We must induce foreigners who are unfamiliar with our history and culture to stay.
Germany was able to start national progress because sincere apology about the brutality of the Nazi Reich was made by Willy Brandt in 1970. Consequently, Germany climbed back up to the center of Europe, and became one of the main nations of the 4th industrial revolution. This healthy mind of Germany was presented at Documenta. Documenta shares the spirit with visitors in Kassel every 5 years.
The DMZ in Paju is suitable for the Documenta of ‘Korea’. It is a crucial spot of Korean history, a point of contact with North Korea, and a special place which stands for the protection of natural ecology. In addition, it symbolizes reconciliation between South and North Korea, sufficiently usable for the festival of Eastern Asia. Moreover it is a lively documentation of the Korean race. The lesson of Documenta is anticipated to be utilized meaningfully in Korea as well.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고의 논제는 2017년에 개최된 제14회 카셀 도큐멘타 예술 축제의 기록화 스토리텔링 연구이다. 카셀 도큐멘타에 전시되는 작품들은 모두 역사적 메시지를 가지고 있다. 역사적 성찰과 재현, 미래지향적 역사 재구성을 도모하는 카셀 도큐멘타는 그 자체가 역사의 기록화 작업이다. 그래서 기록화 속에 내재된 현대 인류가 지향하는 이야기를 예술로 도출해 내고 있다.
카셀 도큐멘타는 제2차 세계대전의 산물이며, 동시에 유럽 역사의 산물이다. 특히 2017년의 카셀 도큐멘타 14는 유럽 사회가 위기를 맞을 때마다 현상했던 일종의 ‘르네상스’로 해석된다. 2천년 전 유럽을 호령했던 그리스 정신을 되살리려는 노력이었다. 또한 20세기 유럽 역사의 범죄 행위를 반성하고 성찰하려는 정치·문화 운동이었다.
카셀 도큐멘타는 아테네를 배웠지만, 이제 우리는 카셀을 배울 차례이다. 우리도 동아시아의 역사문화적 랜드마크가 될 예술 축제를 조직해야 한다. 보편적이나 한국적이고도 창의적인 축제를 기획해야 한다. 우리 역사와 문화에 생소한 외국인들의 발길이 한국에 머물 수 있게 해야 한다.
독일은 1970년 빌리 브란트 총리의 나치 정권의 만행에 대한 반성과 사죄로 새로운 국가적 행보를 시작할 수 있었다. 그 결과 독일은 다시 유럽의 중심으로 재건되었고, 오늘날은 제4차 산업혁명의 중심 국가가 되었다. 바로 이러한 독일인들의 건강한 정신은 카셀 도큐멘타로 발현되었고, 5년 마다 카셀을 찾는 방문객들과 독일의 정신을 교감하고 있다.
카셀 도큐멘타의 한국 현장으로 파주의 DMZ를 추천한다. 한국 역사의 결정적 현장이면서, 북한과의 가장 가까운 접점이 바로 이 곳이다. 또한 자연생태학 보존의 특별한 장소로 세계적 이목이 집중되는 곳이기도 하다. DMZ는 남북한의 화해의 공간이자, 동아시아의 예술 축제의 공간으로 충분히 활용할 수 있다. 더욱이 한민족 역사의 기록화 현장이기도 하다. 카셀 도큐멘타의 교훈은 분명 한국에서도 유의미하게 활용될 것이라 기대한다.
