This study was conducted for the purpose of deeply understanding the stories lived through the counseling training experience of pastors who majored in counseling and discovering their meaning. To this end, we adopted the narrative inquiry method suggested by Clandinin and Connelly (2000/2007) and explored the stories lived through the counseling training experience of the research participants while considering the three-dimensional narrative inquiry space of temporality, sociality, and place.
The research participants of this study were pastors who completed an M.Div. degree at a theological seminary and served in a church, majored in counseling as a graduate student, experienced counseling training, and are currently serving in a church. The data collection period was from June 13, 2024 to August 23, 2024, and the main method of data collection was in-depth interviews through interview conversations. Narrative inquiry is a collaborative process that emphasizes relationships with participants. The researcher described the life stories of the research participants in the flow of time and space, considering the interaction between the internal conditions and the external environment, according to the procedure of conducting narrative inquiry.
The stories of the counseling training experience of the pastor who majored in counseling were divided into <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><The beginning of ministry and the story>, <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><Stories of Counseling Training Experiences in a Relational Context>, and <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><Stories of Living as a Pastor> after Counseling Training. <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><The beginning of ministry and the story> was divided into stories of ‘Reason for Becoming a Pastor’, ‘Stories of Ministry’, and ‘Reason for Majoring in Counseling’, and <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><Stories of Counseling Training Experiences in a Relational Context> was divided into sub-themes of ‘Stories of Relationships with Me’, ‘Stories of Relationships with Congregation Members’, and ‘Stories of Relationships with Family’. In addition, <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><Stories of Living as a Pastor> was divided into ‘Stories of Living as Oneself’, ‘Stories of Living as a Pastor and Counselor’, and ‘Stories of the Ministry Field’ to develop the narrative.
Research Puzzle 1 is: What is the beginning of ministry and the story of ministry before counseling training? In [Kim Jun-su]’s story, <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><The beginning of ministry and the story> was ‘I called you a servant’ as the reason for becoming a pastor, ‘This is not right’ as the story of ministry, and ‘How about learning counseling?’ as the reason for majoring in counseling. In [Lee Seong-jae]’s story, <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><The beginning of ministry and the story> was ‘This is my path’ as the reason for becoming a pastor, ‘Monsters and middle leaders’ as the story of ministry, and ‘The path I must already take’ as the reason for majoring in counseling. In [Park Jeong-sik]’s story, <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><The beginning of ministry and the story> was ‘A long-held dream’ as the reason for becoming a pastor, ‘Light and shadow’ as the story of ministry, and ‘For another life’ as the reason for majoring in counseling. Research Puzzle 2 is: How did you experience the counseling training course in the relational context (relationship with myself, relationship with church members, relationship with family)? In [Kim Jun-su]’s story, the story of my relationship with myself was ‘Seeing myself and knowing myself’, the story of my relationship with the congregation was ‘Our pastor has changed’, and the story of my relationship with my family was ‘I am the happiest now’. In [Lee Seong-jae]’s story, the story of my relationship with myself was ‘Reflecting and reflecting again’, the story of my relationship with the congregation was ‘Let’s go together’, and the story of my relationship with my family was ‘I will fill in what is lacking’. In [Park Jeong-sik]’s story, the story of my relationship with myself was ‘Meeting the incurable’, the story of my relationship with the congregation was ‘It was good to learn counseling’, and the story of my relationship with my family was ‘Escape from the shackles’. Research Puzzle 3 is, what is the story of a pastor who has experienced counseling training living as a pastor in the ministry field? In [Kim Jun-su]’s story, the story of living as myself was ‘Freely and truthfully’, the story of living as a pastor and counselor was ‘Unsolvable mystery’, and the story of the ministry field was ‘Get on board’. In the story of [Lee Seong-jae], the story of living as oneself was analyzed as ‘Invisible Salt’, the story of living as a pastor and counselor was analyzed as ‘The Path We Must Take Together’, and the story of the ministry site was analyzed as ‘Temperament and Vision Meet’. In the story of [Park Jeong-sik], the story of living as oneself was analyzed as ‘I Gained Freedom’, the story of living as a pastor and counselor was analyzed as ‘Freedom Gained After Worry’, and the story of the ministry site was analyzed as ‘More Joy’. Based on the results above.
The meaning of the story of a pastor who majored in counseling through his counseling training experience is ‘Understanding Me and Going to God’, ‘Going Beyond Me to Others’, ‘Going Through Darkness to Light’, and ‘Going Beyond Oneself to Community’. In addition, the Christian counseling discussion was delivered as ‘a sound that resonates in the field’, and along with the message that interest and understanding of pastors as human beings are necessary, specific Christian counseling intervention methods and preventive measures were presented to help pastors.
As for the significance of the study, in terms of personal legitimacy, the researcher and research participants were able to discover the meaning of their past lives by encountering their own stories and have direction and hope for their future lives. In addition, in terms of practical legitimacy, it broadened the scope of interest and understanding of pastors as human beings in the Christian counseling field and the pastoral field, and laid the foundation for Christian counseling intervention methods. In terms of social legitimacy, it suggested the possibility that the church community can respond to the needs of society.
In follow-up studies, it was suggested to conduct research by segmenting counseling training experiences, to analyze the differences in individual experiences by studying those who completed the counseling training course in the same school curriculum, or to select female pastors instead of male pastors for research. In addition, the study's limitations were that the stories the research participants told about their counseling training experiences did not reflect factors other than counseling training, and that it was not clear how the church members to which the research participants belonged experienced their pastors before and after counseling training.
