This paper deals with the views on teaching profession, maintained by secondary school teachers in Korea. The approach does not rely on questionnaire method, but requests the responding teachers to freely express their opinions about some suggested topics on teaching profession. We are able to draw out following conclusions from the study.
First, many secondary school teachers agree on some qualities that the ideal educator should meet: desirable views on life and teaching, mastery of his major field, affection for pupils, responsibility on his occupation, a good example for others, and persistent efforts.
Second, the responses on the teachers' social status split in two: satisfactory and unsatisfactory. The former treasures learners' guidance, professional occupation, respectable persons, and community leaders, while the latter resents low economic status, lacking social recognition, underrated teachers' authority, and some disqualified teachers.
Finally, the educators rejoice in encouraging learners' growth, correcting problem learners, cultivating elites, transmitting skills and knowledge, while they regret excessive chores, irrational salary, undervalued teachers' position, discourses with problem pupils, and bureaucratization of teachers' community.
