This study examines ‘Han Kang’s Human Acts’ and ‘Tsushima Yuko’s ‘The Laughing Wolf’ from the perspective of memory not as a mere reproduction of the past, but as a material event that constitutes the present through sensation, the body, objects, and space—what this study terms the ‘recomposition of memory’. Drawing on ‘Gilles Deleuze’s theory of time and the concept of virtual memory’ as its theoretical framework, the analysis explores how the violent past in both works does not recur in identical forms, but instead ruptures the present through modes of difference and intensity.
In ‘Human Acts’, memory extends beyond individual wounds to become ‘collective trauma’, transforming into an ‘ethical space of testimony’ through material traces and ritualized practices. In contrast, in ‘The Laughing Wolf’, memory appears as an ‘autonomous act of recomposition’ that enables endurance in the face of lack; rather than adhering to factual accuracy, it functions as an ‘ontological mechanism that makes the subject’s survival possible’.
Despite their distinct historical conditions, both works reveal a shared understanding of memory—not as a psychological repository internal to the subject, but as ‘a mode through which time itself generates and reconfigures the present’. Through this comparative analysis, the study aims to elucidate how the literary works of Han Kang and Tsushima Yuko aesthetically and conceptually articulate the ‘ethical and ontological structures of memory, time, and materiality’ in the aftermath of state violence.
