This paper compares Ainu cultural representations in novels from the 1950s and 2010s to understand how representations of the Ainu people have changed over time and examine the meanings embedded in these changes. Considering social and academic influences, the analysis focuses on selected works: Ishimori Nobuo(石森延男)’s “Kotan no Kuchibue”(コタンの口笛) (1957, winner of the Mimei Literary Award and the Sankei Children’s Publishing Culture Award in 1958) and Kawagoe Soichi(川越宗一)’s “Netsugen”(熱源) (2019, winner of the Naoki Prize in 2020). While “Kotan no Kuchibue” contains many scenes depicting the endurance of unjust ethnic discrimination, “Netsugen” emphasizes a proactive stance against discrimination. Even within Ainu traditional culture, “Kotan no Kuchibue” often refers to discrimination as a cause, while “Netsugen” presents positive representations evoking ethnic identity and pride. These differences are likely due to differences in the ideal Ainu representations sought in the two works. “Kotan no Kuchibue” understands the Ainu as a people who should be integrated into Japan, while “Netsugen” respects the Ainu as a self-reliant entity. Although both works were written by non-Ainu writers, these differences in perspective are likely a reflection of the changes in Japanese society that have been taking place since the 1990s, which have led to the recognition of the Ainu’s social rights.
