칼데콧 수상작에 대한 미국의 내용분석 논문 동향 = Literature Review of Content Analysis Research on Caldecott Award Picture Books in the United States

국문 초록 (Abstract)

그림책의 연구 방법론 중에서 내용분석 연구가 큰 비중을 차지고 하고 있으나, 그림책 내용분석연구 논문들의 동향 조사와 평가 연구는 아직 본격적으로 이루어지고 있지 않다. 본 연구는 국내에서도 그 인지도가 매우 높은 칼데콧 수상작에 대한 해외의 내용분석 논문들을 대상으로 하여 미국의 그림책 내용분석 연구의 동향을 파악하고, 향후 그림책 내용 분석 연구를 위한 시사점을 얻고자 수행되었다. 이를 위해 1968년부터 2015년까지 발표된 칼데콧 수상작 내용분석 연구 35 편을 연구대상으로정하고, 이 논문들의 주제, 발표된 학술지의 성격, 연구 방법의 타당성을 조사하였다. 연구 결과, 그 기간 동안 칼데콧 수상작을 연구대상으로 하는 내용분석 논문은 꾸준히 증가하는 추세를 보였으며 성역할에 관련한 주제는 연구 초기부터 최근까지 가장 높은 비율을 보였다. 또한 과반수 이상의 논문들이 교육학과 문학관련 학술지에 게재되었으며, 연구 방법에서는 연역적 분석과 귀납적 분석 방법이 비슷한 비율로 이루어졌다. 연구의 유형에서는 질적 연구보다 양적연구가 더 많았으며 분석 단위로서는 글과 그림을 모두를 분석한 연구가 가장 많았다. 그러나 예비조사와 채점자간 신뢰도 산출과 같이 연구의 타당성과 신뢰성을 담보하는 연구 절차의 요소들이 생략된 연구들도 상당수 많이 발견되었다. 이러한 본 연구의 결과는 향후 국내에서 이루어지는 그림책 내용분석 연구를 위한 기초자료로서 기여할 수 있을 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper did a critical literature review of content analysis research on Caldecott Award picture books, which were published in the US. For this purpose, research papers published from 1968 to 2015 in the US were reviewed, and 35 papers including 5 theses and 30 journal articles were found. The results of this study are as follows: (1) the number of research papers has gradually increased over the years; (2) themes related to protagonists’ sex-roles have been mostly studied; (3) more than half of the studies were published in journals affiliated with the education and literature field; and (4) regarding the research methodology, the portion of deductive methods was about the same as the inductive ones, and quantitative research analyses were used much more than qualitative ones. Many papers have limitations regarding the research procedures such as a lack of detailed information about inter-coder reliability and pilot studies, and the unit of analysis. The findings of this study provide some suggestions for future studies using content analysis methodology on picture books to ensure the validity and reliability of the research.
