The special features on Ernst Kantorowicz` The King`s Two Bodies in Representations (2009) deserve our attention in that they show Shakespeare`s relevance in exploring theoretical-political issues of our times. While former Kantorowicz-inspired critics of Shakespearean drama have repeatedly interpreted Shakespeare as a monarchist, they aim to define Shakespeare along with Kantorowicz as a guardian of English constitutionalism by arguing that The King`s Two Bodies and Richard Ⅱ critique Carl Schmitt`s theory of sovereignty. Richard Ⅱ can be their wise and apt choice because it dramatizes the crisis of sovereignty through the deposition of a medieval king. Richard Ⅱ allows us to examine the intricate relationship of sovereignty, law, and violence, which is also the main concern and contribution of Carl Schmitt. This article aims to reconsider Shakespeare`s exploration of the crisis of sovereignty in Richard Ⅱ, consulting with Carl Schmitt, Etienne Balibar, and Slavoj Zizek. In Richard Ⅱ, Richard is portrayed as the king who aspires to be an absolute monarch above the law like James I`s and Schmitt`s Sovereign, and his tyranny is dramatized as the inevitable result of his idea of absolute kingship. This allows us to see violence inhering in the idea of Divine Kingship, the dominant ideology of Tudor and Stuart Monarchy, and also the violence of Schmitt`s Sovereign. Shakespeare`s probing into violence of sovereignty, however, doesn`t lead to advocating constitutionalism-that is, the rule of law. Shakespeare`s exploration differs from both Carl Schmitt`s and liberal-democrats` in that he questions the concrete content of the law and the order.
