The production of plastics has been steadily increasing, but much of the resulting waste after use is discarded without proper treatment. Abandoned plastics slowly decompose or break down into nano or microplastics, which could be absorbed by living organisms through various routes. This can negatively affect the growth, development, and behavior of said organisms. It is imperative that development of eco-friend bioplastics are prioritized to help alleviate this problem. The natural materials including plants and crops are good candidates to be materialized for this purpose. Unfortunately, biomass plastics made from natural materials inevitably compete with food production. In this study, biomass films were synthesized by extracting pectin from discarded onion peels, which are non-edible waste. Pectin chains are stabilized by hydrogen bonds, so a pure pectin film is easily soluble in water. Since pectin has a negative charge (COO- functional group) in an aqueous solution depending on pH, positively charged chitosan (NH3+ functional group) was mixed with pectin to form electrostatic attractive forces. And then covalent bonds occurred through heat stabilization. By FT-IR and 13C solid state NMR, the morphology of the films was confirmed. By SEM images, network formations was confirmed. The pH and heat stability was confirmed. In addition, the film was not easily decomposed/dissolved in water and beverages. In conclusion, we were able to prepare the eco-friend bioplastic films using the wasted pectin and chitosan. This could provide an alternative method for developing a new material to substitute harmful plastics in use.
