During schooldays of University, the student of departtment of nursing experience clinical practice. Although there are rnany studies about clinical practice for student nurses, most of them are quantitative studies and to propose the idea for further study on an improvement of teacching students in the clinical setting.
So the purpose of this Qualitative, Descriptive study was to examine the lived experiences of student nurses in the clinical setting. This research used narrative inquiry.
The number of subjects was twenty-five, and the criteria for selection was as follows :
i ) subjects were students who major major in nursing science.
ii) subjects consented to participate in
iii) subjects could speak and read Korean
iv) subjects allowed to use these data only for this study.
Data were collected through story telling and observation from July 2003 to July 2004. Contents of the story telling recorded and transcribed immediately after that. On the basis of these data, the experience of student nurses are as follows:
1) When the student nurses begin the clinical practice for the flrst time, rnost of the students feel fearful, nervous, stressful and expectable. They didn’t know what to do all the time for practice and are afraid of making a mistakes to patlents
2) Also they mentioned to have hard time to make good relation with patients.
3) They are less stressful than first clinical practice. The student nurses become to have concept of care implied ethical character : caring was related to rnoral feeling based of on human dignity and ernotional communication in inteπpersonal -relationship according nursing theories. Difficulty of interpersonal relations after being familiar with practice, developing good relations with nurses, doctors, patients and families of the patients.
4) Last time of the practice. they feel more comfortable than previous and become reinforcement of self experience, enrichment of understanding the family member of the patient and search of self development. The student nurses determine to be good nurses with finishing the practice. And also They have opportunity to confirm theirr identity as nurse.
on the basis of these findings, following recorrnnendations are to be made
1) It is necessary that the comparative study on experience of clinical practice between students of universities with their own hospital and those without their own hospital.
2) Data collection and analysis not only through narrative method but also through other various methods must be studied.
3) Comparative study is necessary between enhanced clinical experiences through analysis of interfering factors and the original experiences.
