이익충돌의 공개가 성인의 도덕적 행동에 미치는 영향

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 이익충돌 상황에서 연령, 성별, 학력, 월 소득 수준에 따라 성인의 도덕적 행동에 차이가 나는지 살펴보고, 이익충돌이 야기하는 문제에 대한 해결책으로 알려진 ‘공개’가 도덕적 행동에 미치는 영향을 확인하고자 하였다. 이를 위해, 이익충돌 상황에 대한 실험 방법을 차용하여 자체적으로 개발한 온라인 실험을 실시하였다. 실험은 사익을 추구하기보다 전문가로서의 역할을 수행하면 적은 보상을 받으나 전문가로서의 역할보다 사익을 추구하면 많은 보상을 받게 되는 이익충돌 상황으로 설정하였다. 참가자는 모두 자문가가 되어 가상의 파트너에게 두 차례의 조언을 하도록 요구받았다. 20대에서 40대의 성인남녀 195명(남: 68명, 여: 127명)이 실험에 참가했으며, 온라인 실험과 설문조사에 응답하는 절차를 거쳤다. 이중 무성의한 응답을 제외한 190개의 자료가 분석에 포함되었다.
연구 결과, 인구통계학적 변인에 따른 도덕적 행동 차이는 나타나지 않았으며, 이익충돌의 ‘공개’ 집단이 ‘비공개’ 집단보다 도덕적으로 행동한 것으로 관찰되었다. 실험에 포함된 두 차례의 과제 중, 공개 여부를 결정하기 전에 실시한 첫 번째 과제에서는 도덕적 행동 수준에서 차이가 나타나지 않았으나 공개 여부를 결정하고 나서 실시한 두 번째 과제에서는 공개와 비공개 집단 간 유의미한 차이가 발견됐다. 이는 이익충돌의 공개가 도덕적 행동에 긍정적 영향을 미침을 시사한다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 연구의 의의 및 함의와 더불어 후속 연구를 위한 제언을 논의하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

A conflict of interest (COI) occurs when someone’s professional role and his or her personal interests conflict. In COI, people are likely to give biased advice or opinions to others. Disclosure is a commonly adopted strategy for the adverse effect of COI. However, previous studies have shown that disclosure is not as effective as expected, leading disclosers feel morally-licensed so they give more biased advice.
The purposes of this study were to examine, 1) if demographical variables have an impact on moral behavior and 2) whether disclosure affects moral behavior of adults. A total of 195 adults participated in the on-line experiment which consisted of two sets of tasks based on the situation of COI.
The result of the first task doesn’t show any significant difference among the participants, which means there is no impact of demographical variables on adults’ moral behavior. But the second one, which was given after participants chose whether to disclose, shows that people who had decided to disclose their situation of COI, gave more unbiased information to the virtual partners. It suggests that disclosure could promote moral behaviors of adults in COI. Issues and limitations are further discussed.
