This dissertation aims to elucidate the principles of construction and the mode of existence of Universe(hereafter, worldview) as manifested in participatory narratives, where the term denotes not merely a way of seeing the world but a narrative universe that can be inhabited, expanded, and shared. In literary studies, however, it has often been used in a more limited sense, referring either to the author’s personal values embodied in a work, the fictional world of the text, or merely its background or setting, frequently without clear distinction among these notions. This conceptual conflation appears to stem from the long-standing assumption in literary studies that a literary work is primarily understood as a being-in-the-world. As a concrete object existing within the world, literature has historically justified its value through the representation of a portion of reality. Within this framework, genres such as fantasy or romance—deemed insufficiently relevant to reality—were not analyzed profoundly in acaemic manners until their epistemic value could be verified. In Fact, a literary work is not only a being that exists within the world; it is also an entity that materializes a distinct world of its own into existence. In contemporary participatory narratives, the concept of worldview in particular reveals an ontological status that cannot be adequately explained by the notions of fictional world or background alone. For example, in the Harry Potter series, the worldview not only structures the fictional universe of the text but also extends beyond it, exerting tangible effects on readers and reconfiguring their lived reality as a comprehensive narrative Universe. This distinctive mode of existence renders worldview as Universe a crucial object of inquiry, as it offers theoretical insight into reader-centered narrative design in today’s cultural industries while simultaneously enabling a re-examination of the representational function traditionally ascribed to literature.
Chapter 2 examines Possible Worlds Theory as a theoretical framework for analyzing the principles underlying the construction of Universe. When the focus shifts from narrative to world, the central issue becomes how readers determine the intrinsic value of fictional statements and the ontological status of the fictional worlds they constitute. Possible Worlds Theory, originally developed in analytic philosophy to assess the meaning of fiction, is grounded in an epistemological orientation that resists defining fiction merely as the negation of fact. In the mid-twentieth century, logicians questioned the single-world assumption that recognized only the actual world as real, instead drawing on the pluralistic implications latent in Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz’s concept of possible worlds. By linking the possibility of worlds in which fictional prototypes could exist to fictionality itself, they established a system defined as modal logic capable of evaluating fictional truth. From the mid-1970s onward, literary scholars appropriated this framework to conceptualize the ontological status of fictional worlds realized through texts. This realization demonstrates that such worlds could possess autonomy without isolation, even in the absence of referential originals. In particular, Marie-Laure Ryan’s Possible Worlds theory systematizes the layers of worlds experienced by readers within fictional communication into three categories : the Actual World (AW), the Textual Actual World (TAW), and the Textual Referential World (TRW). This typological framework reflects the process by which readers enter the TAW as recipients of a narrative and construct worlds oriented around the TRW in relation to the AW, thereby offering a productive analytical tool for examining the construction of Universe.
Chapter 3 employs the principles governing fictional meaning and Ryan’s AW–TAW–TRW framework as topological instruments to analyze the construction of Universe, taking the Harry Potter series as its primary case study. When applied topologically, the boundaries between the worlds experienced by readers can be categorized into three relational pairs: [1] AW–TAW, [2] TAW–TRW, and [3] TRW–AW. At the AW–TAW threshold, readers detach from the actual world and enter the textual actual world. In this process, genre codes—such as those of the school novel, the Gothic novel, and fantasy—as well as narrative elements like wizards, fairies, and broomsticks are detached from their original narrative contexts in the AW and form a League as they vie for narrative space in a movement toward returning to that original narrative. At the TAW–TRW threshold, readers discern a coherent order emerging from this League, as proper names such as “Hogwarts,” “Gryffindor,” and “Quidditch” function as Codes that register these elements within a new narrative order and establish distinctive paradigmatic structures. Finally, at the TRW–AW threshold, readers initiate an expansive movement that re-codes elements stabilized by these Codes within the actual world. Through this process, Links are formed, which allow the narrative of the Textual Universe (TU) to connect with the AW even after the text has concluded. The principles of League, Code, and Link correspond respectively to the creativity, singularity, and expansibility of a Universe. The Universe realized through this tripartite structure thus functions not as a mere assemblage of images or a backdrop, but as a narrative reality that utilizes the tension between the world as perceived and the world as being as a recursive engine for continuous world-creation.
Chapter 4 discusses the Universe as revealed through the aforementioned principles and explores the new literary ontology that emerges as a result. The construction principles of the Universe, captured through Ryan’s theory, serve as analytical tools for popular narratives. For instance, the extent to which a world is driven by meaningful competition among narrative elements can be explained through the League, while the specific unique entities that sustain that world can be identified through the Code. Furthermore, the degree to which a world’s singularity possesses expansibility within the actual world is articulated through the Link. A Universe thus constructed is understood as a concept expressing the possibility of a world becoming-other than itself due to the presence of the reader. In other words, it exists not as a closed structure but as an open system. In this chapter, this openness is likened to a platform that circulates and mediates the interests of diverse users in today’s virtual environments. This perspective allows literary works to be illuminated in a new light. Traditionally, literature has justified its value either as a being-in-the-world that imitates reality (representation) or as a tool for uncovering linguistic structures (structuralism). However, the Universe as an open system allows us to conceive of a work not as a being-in-the-world, but as a world-in-being. As a world-in-being, literature functions as a field of expression that mediates relations among various beings inside and outside the text by autonomously selecting the truth or falsity of its statements even in the absence of an original referent. Ultimately, literature is not merely an object of singular interpretation; it exists as the world itself in which diverse beings actualize their own existence.
With the development of digital media, the reader's participation in the world is increasingly becoming a common practice in constructing narratives. Today, the efficacy of the concept known as Universe is being more and more proved in different era. Yet, much like concepts such as ‘OSMU’, ‘content IP’, and ‘transmedia storytelling’, this concept too may merely be a term capturing a fleeting phenomenon within the long-standing currents of cultural history. Nevertheless, the world-creating properties embodied within this concept hold humanistic significance. They demonstrate that the world, at this very moment, can be newly created through the actions of subjects seeking to affirm its existence. This dissertation articulates that significance in three respects: first, by proposing a new methodology for analyzing Universe in popular narratives through the tripartite principle of League–Code–Link; second, by extending Possible Worlds Theory beyond a mere typological tool and establishing its viability as a practical instrument for actual textual analysis; and third, by offering a new perspective on the ontological status of literature. By moving beyond the reduction of a work to a being-in-the-world, this study argues that literature should be conceived as a world-in-being newly created through reader participation. Consequently, literature can be affirmed as a creative space that constructs a unique reality through the reader's engagement, without the need to imitate the actual world or disclose a pre-existing truth.

특히 마리-로르 라이언(Marie-Laure Ryan)의 가능세계론은 청자가 화자와의 허구적 의사소통 구조 속에서 경험하게 되는 세계들의 층위를 현실세계(AW:Actual World), 텍스트 내 현실세계(TAW:Textual Actual World), 텍스트적 참조세계(TRW:Textual Referential World)로 유형화하고 있다.

특히 마리-로르 라이언(Marie-Laure Ryan)의 가능세계론은 청자가 화자와의 허구적 의사소통 구조 속에서 경험하게 되는 세계들의 층위를 현실세계(AW:Actual World), 텍스트 내 현실세계(TAW:Textual Actual World), 텍스트적 참조세계(TRW:Textual Referential World)로 유형화하고 있다.
