Increased risk of obesity can begin in childhood. Obesity, which is the most common cause of metabolic syndrome in children, is associated with the development of cardiovascular disease and dyslipidemia. Increased adiposity, resulting in reduced NGF, BDNF and increased levels of oxidative stress and imbalance lipid profiles, may link these neurotrophins with oxidative damages in adolescents. However, regulatory exercise training beneficially improves imbalanced lipid profiles and many disease factors such as oxidative stress induced inflammation, and Metsyn.
The functions of each NGF, BDNF, and HGF as growth factors are different. The neurotrophins have been considered as potential adipokines with possible links to the Metsyn and other inflammatory-related disease. The best known NT, NGF, has recently been shown to be directly from human adipocyte, indicating that it is indeed an adipokine. HGF has also been considered as the indicator in the development of cardiovascular disease. Because elevated serum HGF levels are found in obesity, and obesity is strongly associated with CVD, it is important to investigate the mechanisms that result in elevated serum HGF in obese human. However, studies evaluating serum BDNF, NGF, and HGF in children are rare; no prior reports have studied serum BDNF concentrations in overweight children. Therefore, we studied the effects of a 12-week exercise training on body composition the representative lipid profiles, NGF, BDNF, HGF and oxidative stress markers in normal and obese children.
In the results, body weight, body fat %, blood pressure, TG, LDL-c, and HDL-c were significantly different between NT and OT subjects. NGF and BDNF in NT significantly increased compare with OT but, in HGF was reversely. Circulating ox-LDL and 8-OHdG levels in OT were higher than NT. Significant changes was apparent between pre and post only in NGF.
Obesity can enhance the risks of Metsyn and CVD in children, also can hinder the development of neurotrophins. Exercise training able to inhibit the development of these risk factors, however in this study, only it improves in NGF.
