While moderate amounts of stress can keep us on our toes and help us
thrive, when the amount of stress exceeds an individual's capacity, it can
have a negative impact on our health. In particular, undergraduate and
graduate students, who are in the process of transitioning from school to
workplace, are more vulnerable to stress as they experience high workloads,
challenges, and lack of free time. Therefore, this study aims to investigate
the emotions felt by students, when looking at forest landscape photos
through time- and space-independent photographs, and to identify the
characteristics of each type by deriving adjective factors that affect the
reduction of stress, and to analyze the differences through brain wave
analysis.
In this study, in order to determine the effect of beautiful landscape
photos on stress reduction, we extracted photos corresponding to seven types
of forest landscapes (Panoramic, Feature, Enclosed, Focal, Canopied, Detail,
and Ephemeral) from Litton's seven types of forest landscapes based on "100 photos of national parks", and then extracted adjectives for each type, and
conducted a survey and measured electroencephalogram (EEG) of 32
undergraduate and graduate students over the age of 20.
The results of this study are as follows: First, to derive the emotions of
the each type of forest landscape through adjectives by deriving adjectives
from previous research. Then, through a survey, we selected 16 adjectives
for panoramic landscapes, 10 for topographic landscapes, 17 for important
landscapes, 13 for focal landscapes, 10 for irrigated landscapes, 13 for
detailed landscapes, and 15 for temporary landscapes, totaling 94 adjectives.
The results of this study are as follows: First, we derived adjectives for
each type of forest landscape by deriving adjectives from previous studies.
Through the questionnaire, we selected 16 adjectives for panoramic
landscapes, 10 for feature landscapes, 17 for Enclosed landscapes, 13 for
focal landscapes, 10 for canopied landscapes, 13 for detail landscapes, and 15
for ephemeral landscapes, totaling 94 adjectives.
Second, adjectives were derived by frequency analysis and factor analysis
to describe the emotions that can be experienced according to the types of
forest landscapes of Litton. As a result, the following adjectives were derived
for the primary types: for Panoramic Landscape, 'panoramic', 'continuous',
and 'authoritative'; Feature Landscape, 'unique', and 'solemn'; Enclosed
Landscape, 'gradual', 'enclosed', 'relaxed', and 'spacious'; and Focal
Landscape, 'constant', 'impressive', 'concentrated', and 'dominant'. For the
secondary type of landscape, Canopied Landscape, we derived factors such
as 'comfortable','focused', and 'visual'; Detailed Landscape, 'delicate',
'sensual', 'focused', and 'regular', and Ephemera
l Landscape, 'vivid', 'diverse',
'calm', 'transient', and 'massive'. Third, we analyzed the EEG to find out the differences between
landscape types. First, we found that Alpha waves, which are related to rest
and stress, were highest in the Enclosed Landscape and lowest in the Focal
Landscape. For Beta waves, which have a high frequency during anxiety and
stress, Ephemeral Landscape had the highest frequency, while Enclosed
Landscape had the lowest. Therefore, it can be assumed that Enclosed
Landscape is the most influential in reducing stress among forest landscape
types.
This study confirmed the effect of forest landscape type on stress
reduction, and we hope that it will be used as a basic data to help reduce
stress for subjects who have difficulty experiencing forest landscapes directly,
such as patients with limited mobility, and office workers with limited time.
