John Lydgate’s Troy Book registers the historical crisis of late medieval chivalric masculinity from the distinctive perspective of a court poet with a monastic background. Written in the first quarter of the fifteenth century, the poem emerges at a time when chivalric ideology was undergoing a profound transformation: its cultural prestige expanded even as its military function declined, while conflicting social and ideological demands generated internal tensions within chivalric masculine identity. This thesis argues that Lydgate’s moral project ultimately fails to resolve these tensions.

On the one hand, Lydgate’s signature program of prudence proves incapable of offering a viable alternative model of masculinity. Compromised by his strong bias toward Hector and the Trojan cause, prudence gradually loses its capacity to restrain the excessive virility of male warriors—a failure that not only destabilizes the world of the poem but also reflects the anxieties of Lydgate’s contemporary English society.

On the other hand, Lydgate’s sustained campaign against courtly love and women further undermines chivalry’s potential for moral reform and cultural adaptability. Although his hostility toward courtly love was most likely shared by many conservative religious and secular contemporaries, Lydgate is unable to suppress it fully in Troy Book, while his very attempts at censorship push ideals of femininity toward unsustainable and grotesque extremes.

By reading Troy Book as a conflicted moral intervention rather than as the record of a coherent reformist vision, this thesis demonstrates how Lydgate’s poem exposes the structural contradictions of late medieval chivalric masculinity.
