      This paper places emphasis on revealing the meaning of the customs in『Honbul』by Choi Myung-hee and 『Toji』 by Park Kyeong-Ri.First of all, the folk religion revealed in 『Honbul』 and 『Toji』 is analyzed in Chapter II. Folk religion may be considered as a religious phenomenon deeply embedded in our national spirit, or a concentrated form of religious observances of the public. There were a lot of scenes in which people used to wish upon the moonin 『Honbul』. For example, there were scenes in which Hyowon would absorb the moonlight in order to perpetuate the family line and Chunbok wished for the rise of status upon the moon by getting Gangsil. The moon represents the yin energy and maternity which prays for the delivery of woman. Folk religion in 『Toji』 is to wardoff the malignant demons from being disturbed and to overcome the fear of peopleby the shamanistic acts. Park Kyeong-Ri considered the shamanism as the root ofdominating the people of Joseon dynasty and related the shamanism with thevitalism. Social customs and ritual culture depicted in 『Honbul』 and 『Toji』 were discussedin Chapter III. In 『Honbul』 wedding ceremony is described in great details and remarriage and third-marriage were also described. However, women in 『Honbul』carry their sorrow with them by the wedding rather than a joy. Wedding is used as a device to imply a bad luck to the women in 『Honbul』, including Madam Cheongam, Hyowon, Inwoldaeg, The description about the wedding is almost omitted in 『Toji』. To Choi Seohee, wedding is a rite of passage to the family head and serves as afoundation to restore the glory of the Chois. Therefore, the combination of Seohee and Gilsang is considered as anti-social and de-institutionalized. In addition, wedding has something to do with the development aspect from the traditional status system to the new family relation in 『Toji』. On the other hand, the ancestral rites of Madam Cheongam extends beyond her family into the whole town and its procedureis described in details. Madam Cheongam becomes the object to be worshiped by the whole town, not only to be worshiped as a wife of the eldest son``s family in the Lees of Maean. As the narration centered around the lives of the chronological characters of which Seohee forms the pivot proceeds in 『Toji』, the sorrow of our people is embossed with outany specific evidence of he ancestral rites and their related customs coming to light
