There has been a growing interest in Korean movie industry among people and scholars these days. However, somewhat paradoxically little empirical research exists on the effects of box office determinants.
This paper intends to provide an empirical analysis of the determinants of box office performance for movies produced in Korea between 1988 and 1999. This study especially focuses on the empirical testing of the effects of actors, actresses producers, directors, genres and film grades for predicting a film's box-office performance. Various analysis methods are employed to do this.
The study found independent variables such as the presence (or involvement) of actors, actresses, directors and producers to be statistically significant. Among them, the roles of actors and directors are found to be the key components responsible for attracting a large audience. However, interestingly this study also found that the star power is concentrated by very few of them. In conjuction with these results. Genre and film grade are also found to be significant covariates in the prediction of box-office performance in this study.
