미국 신좌파운동에 나타난 자유주의의 의미 : 1980년대 한국 좌파운동의 ‘자유주의의 결핍’과의 대조와 민주화과정에 대한 함의

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 미국의 신좌파운동과 미국사회의 자유주의의 연관성을 탐색하기 위한 목적에서 출발한다. 대학생 지식인세력을 중심으로 1960년대에서 1970년대까지 이어진 신좌파운동의 배경으로서 자유주의가 갖는 역사적 의미를 도출하고, 신좌파 형성에 직접 개입하면서 가장 큰 영향을 준 학자로 평가받는 급진적 정치사회학자였던 라이트 밀즈(C. W. Mills)의 학문과 사상을 검토하는 것이 구체적인 연구문제이다. 이를 위해 근대 이후 일반적으로 민주주의국가에서 '저항'이 갖는 의미를 해석하고, 각국 사회운동의 선도세력으로 등장한 학생운동의 속성과 한계를 이론적으로 논의한다. 노동운동이나 농민운동, 시민운동 등 특정한 세력을 기반으로 한 부문운동들과 달리 학생운동은 운동 참여자의 사회적 존재가 주체의 의식과 일치하지 않는 특징이 있다. 따라서, 해당 사회의 이념적 지형과 비판이론의 축적 기반이 학생운동의 주요한 배경임을 밝히고, 자유주의를 특정한 이념적 실체가 아닌 범주적 조건 개념으로 설정한다. 이에 기초하여, 신좌파운동의 전사적(前史的) 배경으로 작용한 미국 자유주의가 갖는 역사적 특징을 정리한다. 신좌파의 비판적 관점에서뿐만 아니라 일반적 수준에서도 모순에 처했던 당대 미국 주류세력의 자유주의적 모순을 조망하고, 여기에 새로운 해석과 재구성을 시도한 미국 신좌파의 위상을 지적한다. 그리고, 철학자 마르쿠제와 더불어 미국 신좌파 형성에 각별한 영향을 준 학자였던 밀즈의 지향과 학문적 특성을 자유주의와의 연관성 맥락에서 검토한다. 결론에서는 논의를 정리하고, 보다 확장된 문제의식의 필요성과 가능성을 언급하면서 사회운동에 관련된 이론적, 현실적 함의를 제시해 볼 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study will seek to identify the historical meaning that Liberalism contains as a background of American New-left and suggest explanations about the consequences of Liberalism. To begin with, it starts from the interpretation of resistance in the modern democratic state and then brings the theoretical discussion of an attribute and a limit of the student power which emerged as the spearhead of the social movement since mid 20C.
Efforts are focused on two measures. First, it views a historical distinction that American Liberalism shows as the historical background of Neo-lefti and an inconsistency of Liberalism as main stream. It then stresses the phase of American New-left which attempts new approach and reconstruction. Second, it examines the ideal orientation and theoritical character of Mills' who especially influenced on American New-left. The final section summarizes the arguments and briefly mentions the theoretical and realistic implication.
