The purposes of this paper are to present the suggestions that the results of study will be given to improve Korean school geography curriculum.
To achieve the purpose, author is to consider the development process of national geography curriculum in the United Kingdom since 1980s.
The contents of study are below:
(1) Great Debate of national geography curriculum development: (a) geography curriculum development initiated by national government, (b) response of British Geographical Association.
(2) Debates of national geography curriculum development: (a) systems of curriculum, (b) purpose of school geography, (c) scope of school geography, (d) stage of school geography.
(3) Issues of national geography curriculum.
The suggestions that this study will be given to improve Korean school geography curriculum are as below:
(1) The Korean Education Development initiated the outline of national geography curriculum development in Korea. The status of school geography is determined by the system of subject education. Therefore, we must highlight the importance of geography subject education in this process.
(2) To achieve above goal, we must present and demonstrate the special contributions of school geography to the government and curriculum-makers.
(3) As the Geographical Education committee of Korean Geographical Society study Korean and foreign geography curriculum, geography working group should present the suggestions to strengthen the school geography curriculum of Korea in future.
(4) The geography working group should endeavor to adopt their proposal as a national geography curriculum.
