허련순의 <중국색시>에 나타난 디아스포라의 치유 양상

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

People forced to leave behind their hometown in search of a livelihood and live as outliers in a foreign land where people of another ethnicity form the majority are fated to live a life of sadness and regret. To date, most works of Korean literature dealing with the lives of the Joseon-jok (Chinese of Korean ethnicity) in Korea have portrayed them in terms of a victim mentality, depicting their sorrow and plight as they live in conflict, misunderstanding, and hostility with Koreans. Heo Ryeonsoon’s Chinese Bride portrays the ups and downs of the lives of Dan-i, who has dark memories of being born as someone who would “eat up her parents,” and Do-gyun, who lost both his parents and his leg in an accident. In this novel, Heo depicts one aspect of the tragic modern history of the Joseon-jok and, furthermore, explores the origin of their “search for the Self.” Thus, this work has a new meaning in that goes beyond portraying the conflict structure of binary confrontation to speak of human understanding and values. It tells us that the eternal law of all existence is simply endless repetition and that the desire of humans to better themselves begins with the healing of wounds in our hearts. This work emphasizes the fact that the process of finding one’s identity is linked with communicating with others and that one cannot establish one’s identity in isolation. In this way, Heo Ryeonsoon’s Chinese Bride shows us that the identity of an ethnic group or an individual is not set in stone but is always transforming according to changes in our perception, thereby opening up a new direction for diaspora literature.
