      다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

      Apartment housing developed focus on distributing the number of the housing unit rather than the quality of living. Critical opinions on the deterioration in sense of community, standardized housing typology and deficient open space resulted by those trend have been raised, and consequently there is increasing public interest in the ‘Communal Space’ as a alternative space for resolving those problems mentioned above. The communal space of dwelling unit in Apartment not only have a significant role in intermediating to connect between units, but also intent planning implication as a public open space. Therefore, it can not ignore the importance of communal space design considering the impact on residents’ satisfaction and sustainable community development. Despite the importance of the space, however, it has been disregarded in design processing procedure so that this space has been regarded as an unsafe space within apartment housing which produce unsuitable illuminance and unsafe environment resulting the residents’ unsatisfaction. Thus, this paper will suggest guideline for communal space design through analysis on existing conditions of public housing and residents’ needs which provides ‘inclusive environment design’, ‘safe and pleasant living environment’ and ‘vitalizations of samll group community’.
