18세기 영국의 차 산업과 사회 변화 연구 = A Study on the Tea Industry and Social Change in the Eighteenth Century Britain

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은 18세기의 사회에서 차가 지녔던 영향력에 대해서 다루어 보고자 한다. 차의 영향력은 차 소비와 차 무역이 증가함에 따라 사회가 어떻게 발달했는지에 대해 역사학자들이 강조해 온 주요 주제들과 연관되어 있다 하겠다. 이것은 역사 연구의 두 가지 핵심 맥락을 고찰하고, 사회적 및 상업 역사의 분석을 제시하고자 하였다.
2장은 사회적 경제적 경향과 관련된 소비의 일반적인 흐름에 대해서 중점을 두었다. 여기에서는 또한 차 소비의 증가에 관한 동시대적인 관점과 사회적이고 경제적인 측면에서의 상반된 본질을 강조하고 있다. 사실 차 산업은 계층구조와 성정체성에 연관되어 있는 반면, 유행에 민감한 소비 증가와 하류 계층의 실제적인 소비와도 관련이 있다.
세 번째 장에서는 3명의 다른 차 딜러의 경험을 부각시키고 있는데, 그들의 경험은 현대 상업의 발달과 연관되어 있음을 알 수 있다. 이 시기가 상업적인 전환기였으며 크고 작은 상인들 간의 차이점이 반영되는 때이기도 하였다. 3장에서는 또한 런던의 차 산업과 더불어 상대적으로 지방에서도 차가 부각되어짐으로 인해 지역 산업의 발달이 이루어졌음을 강조하였다. 이러한 사례 연구를 통해 필목 할 만한 상업적 발전에 대한 유용한 통찰력을 제공함은 물론, 이 시기 영국 사회에서의 차의 중요성에 대해 강조하고 있다.
마지막으로, 4장에서는 불법 차 무역을 살펴보고 이것이 상업적이고 사회적인 영향을 미쳤음을 다루었다. 이것은 영국 남부와 동부 전역을 통한 지역 사회 내에서 발생된 밀수업자들의 활동과 그들의 사회적 지위에 대한 조사를 통해 이루어졌다. 그리고 밀수업자와 사업자들 간에 있었던 이후의 영향과 차 밀수산업에 대한 정부의 반응을 제시하였다.
본 연구는 역사가들에 의해 제시된 여러 가지 요소들을 언급하면서, 이곳에서 논의된 다양한 사회적 경제적 사항들에 대해 분석하려고 한다. 상업의 전환시기로서 18세기를 부각하고, 동 시기에 이루어진 상업발전의 모습을 보이기 위하여 차에 관한 경영사례에 초점을 맞추고자 한다. 다음으로 불법적인 차 무역으로 관심을 돌려, 불법적인 차 무역이 영국의 사회와 경제에 어떤 중요성이 있는지, 합법적인 사업과 정부의 정책에 어떠한 영향을 끼쳤는지에 대해 살펴 볼 예정이다.
이번 연구의 중요한 특징은 지금까지 역사가들에 의하여 분리되어 취급되어 왔던 차 소비의 사회적 영향과 경제적 영향을 한데 묶어 검토하는데 있을 것이다. 이 연구는 18 세기의 빠른 산업적 성장 기간 동안의 차 산업의 확산과 발전에 대해 강조하고 있다. 차에 대한 실제 사례들을 강조함으로써 차가 18세기 영국 사회에서 더욱 광범위한 역사적 주제들과 결부되어 있으면서도 다른 한편으로는 우리 일상생활의 기본적인 측면이 될 수 있었던 과정들을 알아보고자 하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This dissertation focuses upon the impact tea had on society in the eighteenth century. It relates key themes that historians have stressed are fundamental in the development of society to the growth of tea consumption and the tea trade. It looks at two key strands of historical study and relates them to provide an analysis of social and commercial history.
Chapter one focuses on the general rise in consumption, associated social and economic trends. It also highlights contemporary viewpoints regarding the growth of the tea consumption and its controversial nature in social and economic spheres. Actually tea industry is related to class structure and gender identity while also stressing the rise in fashionable consumption and its place in practical consumption amongst the lower classes.
The second chapter highlights the experience of three different tea dealers and relates their experience to the development of modern commerce. This was a period of commercial transition and is reflected in the differences between large and small traders. This chapter also highlights the development of provincial commerce and its rise in prominence relative to London. These case studies provide a useful insight into commercial development while also highlighting the prominence of tea in society during the period.
Lastly, Chapter Three turns to look at the illicit tea trade and its impacts upon commerce and society. It examines the experience of smugglers and the position they held within communities throughout southern and eastern England. It then highlights the reaction of the government to the illicit trade and the subsequent impact this had upon smugglers and businessmen.
The study analyses the different social and economic aspects discussed here, alluding to the different elements explored by historians. Then it moves to focus on the business case studies highlighting how tea can be used to demonstrate the development of commerce while stressing the eighteenth century as a period of commercial transition. It turns to look at the illicit tea trade, it's social and economic significance in Britain and the effects on legitimate enterprises and government policy. This study is to tie together the social and economic effects of tea industry which have so far only been treated separated by historians.
This study highlights the spread and development of the tea industry during its early growth of the eighteenth century. By highlighting the experience of food it traces the course of a fundamental aspect of our daily lives while relating it to broader historiographic themes that are associated with the period.
