심적 현실태로서 수학적 대상-힌티카의 아리스토텔레스수학철학 해석에 대한 비판적 고찰 = Mathematical Objects as Mental Actualities: A Critical Review of Hintikka`s Interpretation of Aristotle`s Philosophy of Mathematics

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문의 목적은 힌티카의 아리스토텔레스의 수학철학에대한 해석을 비판적으로 검토하는 것이다. 힌티카의 해석에 따르면, 아리스토텔레스의 수학철학에서 수학적 대상은 지성 안에서 현실태화되며(actualized), 이러한 심적 현실태는 물리적 현실태와 마찬가지로 실재하는 것이다. 그의 해석은 허구주의적 해석과 마찬가지로 소박실재론적해석이 야기하는 정확성의 문제(precision problem)를 피하면서, 동시에허구주의적 해석의 문제점을 해결한다는 장점이 있다. 심적 현실태에대한 힌티카의 이와 같은 주장은 사유(no/hsij)와 사유의 대상은 동일하다는 아리스토텔레스의 주장에 근거한다. 힌티카는 이러한 동일성의 주장이 형상이 물리적으로 현실태화되는 것과 지성 안에서 심적으로 현실태화되는 것 사이에 존재론적 차이가 없음을 함축하는 것으로 이해한다. 그러나 아리스토텔레스의 인식론에서 ‘사유한다는 것(no/hsij)’은단순히 ‘생각하는 것(conceiving)’과 구별되는, 외부 대상으로부터 (지성적) 형상을 받아들이는 과정이며, 따라서 이미 지성과 독립하여 외부에존재하는 것들만이 지성 안에서 현실태화 될 수 있다. 그러므로 만일수학적 대상이 지성과 독립하여 현실태로서 미리 존재하지 않으면, 수학적 대상은 지성 안에서도 현실태화 되지 못한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The aim of this paper is to critically review Hintikka’s interpretation of Aristotle’s philosophy of mathematics. Hintikka argues that, for Aristotle, mathematical objects are actualized in the intellect, and that such mental actualities are as real as physical actualities. His interpretation has merits over other interpretations in that, while avoiding the precision problem caused by the naive realist interpretation, it resolves problems of fictionalist interpretations by making mathematical objects something existent in Aristotle’s ontology. His argument for the mental actuality rests on Aristotle’s claim of the identity between thought and objects of thought. According to Hintikka, this claim implies that there is no difference between forms’ physical realization in the external world and mental realization in our mind. Nevertheless, in Aristotle’s epistemology, thinking is distinguished from mere conceiving. TThinking (no/hsij) is the process of receiving intellectual forms from external objects, so that only things existing independently from our thinking can be actualized in the intellect. Thus, if mathematical objects do not already exist as actualities independently from the intellect, they cannot be actualized in the intellect, either.
