〈민족의 죄인〉과 고백의 전략 : 해방기 채만식 소설세계와 관련하여 = The Sinner of the Nation and the Confession Strategy

국문 초록 (Abstract)

채만식의 〈민족의 죄인〉은 친일행적을 다룬 문제적인 소설로서 상반된 평가를 받아왔다. ‘반성’과 ‘변명’의 이분법 속에서 상반된 해석이 내려져 온 것인데, 고백양식의 견지에서 보면 이러한 이분법을 넘어서면서 해방기 채만식 소설의 내적 연관까지도 파악할 수 있게 된다.
〈민족의 죄인〉의 고백은 ‘반성의 디에게시스 + 변명ㆍ변호의 미메시스’ 패턴을 구사하는 서사전략과 대칭적인 회상구조에 의해 수행된다. 전자에서는 주인공의 반성과 서술자의 변명ㆍ변호가 결합되어 반성의 진정성을 높여주고 후자에서는 과거가 현재를 뒷받침하여 미래를 열어나가게 해 준다. 고백을 통해 주인공이 자신의 역할을 다시 찾고 정체성을 재수립함으로써, 고백의 긍정적ㆍ적극적인 기능이 완수되는 것이다.
해방기 채만식 소설세계에 있어서 〈민족의 죄인〉은 분수령적인 작품이다. 이 소설은 작품 시선의 내향화 과정의 정점에서 풍자를 자기반성으로 지양한 후 역사소설의 지평을 열어 준다. 결론적으로, 이전 작품의 풍자를 완수하고 작품 창작의 새로운 지평을 열어 준 것이 해방기 채만식 소설세계에서 〈민족의 죄인〉이 행하는 기능이라 하겠다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The Sinner of the Nation is a problematic short story, which is verified in the opposition in defining the thematic effects of this work. This study aims to sublate this dichotomy and confirm the inner relation of Chae Mansik's works after Liberation with consideration of the confession mode.
The confession of this short story is made by way of both the narrative strategy which uses the pattern of 'diegesis of reflection + mimesis of excuse/vindication' and the symmetrical recollective narrative structure. The narrative strategy fortifies the sincerity of confession by distributing reflection to the hero and excuse/vindication to the narrator. The narrative structure makes the past support the present. After all, supported by these narrative strategy and structure, the confession strategy makes it possible for the hero to rediscover his social status and reestablish his identity.
The Sinner of the Nation is a bordering work in Chae Mansik's works after Liberation, the intentions of which change from exterior to interior direction with time. The intention for the interior matters is culminated in this work and then the author turns his eyes at the pre-history of the present. As a conclusion we can say that completing the satire of the preceding works and opening a new horizon in writing novels, these are the function of The Sinner of the Nation.
