코로나19와 이방인: 현상학적 조망에서

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은 코로나19로 빚어진 사회적 현상을 현상학적 시각을 통해 이해하는데 그 목적이 있다. 특별히 코로나19 속 세상이 이방인의 세상과 비슷하다는 유비를 통해 그 목적을 달성하고자 한다. 또한 여기서 주목해야 할 것은 코로나19로 빚어진 세상이 단지 이방인의 세상과 비슷하다는 점뿐만 아니라 그것을 탐구하는데 동원될 현상학과도 그 맥을 크게 같이 한다는 점이다. 따라서 이 논문을 통해 코로나의 재앙과 비극 속에서 현상학과 이방인의 사회학의 중요성과 가치가 부각되는 부수적 결과를 갖게 되었다는 것이 증명될 것이다. 이 논문에서 주로 고려될 것은 후설과 슈츠, 그리고 버거와 내이튼슨, 러크만 등에 의해 개진된 현상학적 태도이다. 이것은 일상인들이 그들의 생활세계에서 견지하는 것으로 알려진 자연적 태도와 뚜렷이 대조된다. 이 논문에서는 현상학적 환원, 괄호침, 에포케, 판단중지 등으로 대변되는 현상학적 태도가 자연적 태도의 본질과 함께 비교되면서 집중적으로 논의될 것이다. 그리고 현상학적 환원과 태도를 통해 도출되는, 즉 이화(異化)의 결과 간파되는 현상(실재)의 구성성에 대해서도 살펴볼 것이다. 아울러 이 논문은 현상학적 환원이 짐멜이 현대사회의 주된 특징으로 거론한 거리두기와도 일맥상통한다는 것을 강조하며 코로나19의 세상을 짐멜의 거리두기와도 연결 지을 것이다. 또한 이 모든 것들을 종합하면서 슈츠의 현상학에 지대한 영향을 받은 민간방법론의 창시자 가핑켈이 보는 사회의 상이 코로나19와 어떻게 그리고 얼마나 상호 조응하며 부합하는지에 대해서도 살펴볼 것이다. 결론적으로 이 논문이 규명할 것은 코로나19 속 일상인들이 결국은 필자가 이방인의 사회학에서 개진한 바 있는 이방인의 상과 매우 잘 조응된다는 사실이다. 아울러 이 논문에서 재차 강조되는 것은 행동 없이 사회가 존재할 수 없다는 것이다. 이 논문은 코로나19가 가져 온 일상의 멈춤이 그것을 새삼 확인시켜주었다고 주장하면서, 그 주된 대상은 현상학자와 사회학자들이 아니라 일상인이었다는 것을 강조한다. 물론 현상학자와 사회학자 같은 전문가들도 코로나19를 통해 그것을 재차 확인하게 되었음은 두말할 나위가 없다. 결국 코로나19라는 전 인류적 그리고 전 지구적 재앙은 전혀 의도하지 않게 현상학의 힘과 사회학의 굴기의 계기를 제공하였다고 주장될 수 있다. 또한 일상인들 모두 스스로를 이방인으로 경험하게 함으로써 이방인의 사회학의 타당성과 효용을 입증하는 예상치 못한 결과도 낳았다고 주장할 수 있다. 끝으로 이 논문을 구성함에 있어 채택된 방법은 문헌연구이다. 위에서 언급했던 철학자와 사회학자들의 저작 분석을 통해 소기의 목적 달성을 시도할 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this paper is to understand the sociological phenomena caused by COVID-19 pandemic through phenomenological point of view. To achieve such purpose, the paper specifically shows the analogy of the similarities between the world of COVID-19 and the world of strangers. Besides, one thing to notice in this paper is that not only the world of COVID-19 pandemic and the world of the Strangers are alike but also, it has absolutely something in common with phenomenology utilized in the inquiry of this study. Thus, through this paper, it demonstrates the incidental outcome of high-lighting the value of the sociology of strangers and the phenomenological sociology in the midst of tragedy and calamity of the COVID-19. In this paper, the phenomenological attitude which is articulated by those who are Husserl, Schutz, and Berger, Natanston, Luckman and the natural attitude which ordinary men stick to in their life world are taken into account. Also, the paper discusses mainly on the phenomenological attitude which is represented by phenomenological reduction, bracketing, epoché, suspension of judgement in comparison with the essence of natural attitude. Also, it examines the constitution of the social phenomena which are deduced from the phenomenological reduction and attitude, i.e., estrangement. In addition, the paper emphasizes the phenomenological reduction which goes along the lines of the main feature of modern world, i.e., the process of distancing, and is trying to connect the world of COVID-19 and Simmel’s the process of distancing. The paper also looks into the manner in which Garfinkel’s view of image of society, the founder of ethnomethodology does correspond with the world of COVID-19. Finally, this paper closely examines the corelation between ordinary man’s life in the world of COVID-19 and the image of strangers which I have elaborated in The Sociology of The Stranger. The paper repeatedly stresses that the society can not exist without the actions of ordinary people. The suspension of everyday life due to the COVID-19 assures this argument and allows those who are lay men as well as phenomenologists and sociologists to recognize such. COVID-19, one of the greatest global ruin and misfortune of the humanity unintentionally provokes the power of phenomenology and the rise of sociology, which also makes all lay men to experience themselves as strangers. Thus, the paper argues that COVID-19 has unexpected outcome of confirming the validity and utility of the sociology of the stranger. Lastly, it necessary to mention that the method of literature review has been manipulated to construct this paper. The paper attempts to accomplish the goal, by analyzing the original works of many philosophers and sociologists mentioned the above.
