고양(elevation)의 도덕교육적 함의 = The implications of elevation to moral education

국문 초록 (Abstract)

매우 유덕하고 칭찬을 받을만한 혹은 초인적인 방식에서 행동하는 사람들을 관찰할 때, 우리는 고양이라는 긍정적인 도덕 정서를 경험한다. 고양을 경험한 사람들은 자신에게서 무언가 상승된 느낌이 들고, 인간에 대해 낙관적으로 생각하며, 가슴 속의 온기를 풍부하게 느끼게 된다. 또한 그들은 타인을 도와주려는 욕망과 더불어 앞으로 자신이 더 나은 사람이 되겠다는 강한 포부와 열정을 갖게 된다. 그러므로 고양은 도덕적 행동을 매개할 수 있는 매우 중요한 긍정적인 도덕 정서이다. 하지만 긍정적인 도덕 정서로서의 고양에 관한 연구는 아직 초창기라서 국내외적으로 연구 결과가 많이 축적되어 있지 못한 상태이다. 이에 이 논문에서는 고양에 관한 지금까지의 연구 결과들에 대한 분석을 토대로 하여, 도덕교육에서 고양의 함의에 대해 살펴보았다. 이 논문에서는 긍정적인 도덕 정서로서의 고양의 의미와 효과에 대해 살펴보고, 도덕교육에서 고양이 중요한 이유를 도덕적 면허의 상쇄 효과라는 측면에서 규명하며, 도덕교육에서 학생들의 고양 경험을 증진하기 위한 방안을 제안하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Observing acts of moral virtues triggers moral elevation, a distinct emotion characterized by a sense of feeling morally uplifted and inspired. Elevation is the positive emotion elicited when observing others behaving in particularly virtuous, commendable, or superhuman way. Those who were in a state of elevation reported warm, pleasant, tingling feelings on their chest. They also felt open to other people as their attention turned outward, and they felt motivation to help others and to become better people themselves. Furthermore, elevation triggers prosocial motivation, positive emotion, and helping behavior. However, researches on elevation are not abundant in both domestic and foreign journals. In this regard, this article aimed to explore the implications of elevation to moral education. Based on a literature review, this article showed the meaning and effects of elevation, argued for the importance of elevation in avoiding moral licensing, and finally suggested the desirable way of promoting elevation among students. It is for us very important to acknowledge that elevation provides a special opportunity to turn students' core moral values into action.
