한국의 식민지 근대체험과 여성공간 = 여성주의 문화론적 접근을 위하여

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문의 목적은 한국의 식민지 근대를 여성주의 문화론으로 접근해 보는 것이다. 여기서 여성주의 문화론이란 서구가 주도한 근대화로 인한 지배적 현실로서의 근대, 해방의 동력이라는 이념으로서 근대, 모순적 경험으로서 근대라는 근대성의 다의적 측면 속에서 비서구의 진로를 찾아보기 위해 여성의 일상성과 체험을 규명하려는 이론을 말한다. 이 여성주의 문화론을 구성하는 두 층위로서 젠더와 하위성(subalternity)이라는 정치적 입장과 ‘여성공간’이라는 방법론적 개념이 제시된다.
한국의 식민지 근대는 전근대/근대라는 구분이 표상하는 서구적 근대의 따라잡기로 이해됨으로써 그 지정학적ㆍ공간지리적 차이가 시간적 차이로 환원되어 왔다. 그러한 서구적 근대의 강력한 자장 속에서 일본 제국주의 집단과 식민지 민족주의 남성 집단이 주변화시켜 온 여성이나 농민과 같은 하위주체들의 공간은 비서구적 인식과 상상력을 잠재할 수 있다는 점에서 중요한 의미를 갖는다. 식민지 근대 시기의 여성공간은 전통적인 사적 공간인 ‘가정’ 영역이 근대적으로 변형되는 과정에서 모성공간과 가사노동공간으로 분화되고, 식민지의 근대화를 통해 교육공간, 소비공간, 공적 노동공간과 같은 공적 공간이 여성에게 새로 제공되는 양상을 보여준다. 이 공간들을 분석하는 데 필요한 기본 개념들을 젠더와 하위성의 입장 에서 살펴본 바, 이질적이고 서로 분리되어 보이는 여성공간들은 그 토대인 가부장적 식민주의 자본과 연결되어 공사 구분이 무색할 정도로 민족, 계급, 젠더의 복잡한 동시적 상호작용을 보여준다. 이러한 상호작용이 생성하는 균열이나 모순에 초점을 둘 때, 여성주의 문화론은 식민성으로 인한 억압과 착취를 극복하는 비서구적 근대성의 자원을 찾아낼 수 있을 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this paper is to illuminate Korean colonial modernity from a perspective of Feminist Cultural Theory which attempts to construct the basic concepts and research methodologies for analyzing the cultural meanings in everyday experiences of women. To do this, the complex and multivalent conceptions of modernity such as the western modernization as ideology, the ideal of emancipatory dynamics, and a particular mode of experience, are requested. Then, the political positions of gender/subalternity and a methodological concept of 'Women's Space' are presented as two constituents necessary to explore Korean colonial modernity from the feminist point of view.
The constitution of Korean colonial modernity has been understood as following that of Western modernization model, where the priority of the modern implied in the distinction of the premodern/modern was historically established. So, geopolitical and spacial differences between Western and non-Western countries have been reduced to one of time lag. In other words, Korean colonial modernity was primarily experienced by being exposed to the violent power of western modernity. Emphasizing the analytical frame of space is, therefore, crucial to pursuing the non-Western or nonmodern way. The focus on women's space should be situated in that context. During the Korean colonial modem period, women's spaces consist of maternal, private labor, educational, consumptive, public labor space. The important points in the analysis of such women's spaces are to show the spatial politics of women's differences by dealing with the multiple and simultaneous intersections of nation, class, and gender, and to search for the interconnections among apparently heterogeneous and separate spaces in relation to patriarchal colonial capitalism.
