The purpose of this paper is to investigate the music institutions for young gifted students in Korea as well as other countries.
In part I, we examined music institutions for talented youth in Korea. Different types of schools are as follows;
1)Preparatory school, The Korean National University of Arts
2)Music Academy of Talented Youth, Seoul Arts Center.
3)Bee House Ensemble
4)Continuing Education Center, e.g. Sejong Conservatory
5)Community music programs
6)Private Institutions
In part Ⅱ, Specifically two music institutions from other countries are examined as models;
1)United States, The Mannes College of Music, Preparatory School
2)Canada, The Royal Conservatory of Music
This study suggests that music programs for talented youth need to consist of regular classes in theory, history, and appropriate repertories of music, as well as instruction in performance. Also the preparatory schools should maintain a curricular program for various levels of students. Furthermore, the institutions must support and offer performance opportunities for ensemble.
Above all, the primary purpose of all the preparatory schools is to provide the best environment for musical training of young musicians, which fosters an understanding of the arts and an attitude of respect for their potential contribution to society.
Our hope is that this study may help establish music institutions for young gifted students in Korea to make students understand and appreciate the impact of music on their lives.
