The face image is a most major factor when he/she determines other's impression because it is a representative mediator in forming interpersonal relationships. It is, therefore, essential for harmonious interpersonal relationships and for social success, to concern one's own face image. The motivation of this study was a recognition that the face image is influenced not only by external image but also by internal image, therefore, and that it is important to manage one's own internal image. For this, the subjects were assigned randomly to three groups to analyse the effects. The first group was to use internal face image making program, the second one was to use external face image making program, and the third one was control which did not use any of both programs. The dependent variables including self-esteem, positive thinking, and face image efficacy, which are subtype of self-image, were set to measure the degree of the effects. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to analyse the effects of face image making program on the self-esteem, positive thinking, and face image efficacy.
The subjects were students attending universities located in Seoul. The pretest was performed before treatment, and the post-test was performed after treatment of 200 minutes for two weeks, which is consisted of two sessions of 100 minutes a week. The frequency analysis and the paired t-test were carried out in order to analyse data, and the results are as follows:
Fist, the difference of self-esteem between pretest and post-test were statistically significant on both internal and external face image making programs. This result indicates that not only internal face image making program but also external face image making program contribute to the improvement of self-esteem.
Second, the difference of positive thinking between pretest and post-test were statistically significant on both internal and external face image making programs. This result indicates that the positive thinking increases not only by internal image management but also by external image management.
Third, the difference of face image efficacy between pretest and post-test were statistically significant on both internal and external face image making programs. This result indicates that the face image efficacy is improved not only by internal image management but also by external image management.
Fourth, The analysis on the difference of effects between male and female showed that the internal face image making program had effects on both self-esteem and positive thinking in both male and female, in contrast, that the external image making program had effects on all three variables in female, but had significant effects only on face image efficacy and had not significant effects on self-esteem and positive thinking in male.
The overall consideration on all the results confirms that the both internal and external image making programs had improved all the variables of self-esteem, positive thinking, and face image efficacy but there were difference between male and female; in female, all the three variables of self-esteem, positive thinking, and face image efficacy were improved not only by internal but also external image making program, but in male, only face image efficacy was improved by both programs, and the self-esteem and positive thinking were improved only by external image making program.
It is concluded, therefore, that the image making programs for both internal and external image should be used together to maximize the effects on the improvements of self-esteem, positive thinking, and face image efficacy in male and female, and that, especially in male, the special emphasis should be placed on the internal image making program.
